Learn and relearn<\/p>\n

The worst thing that happens to college students is to \u201crelearn\u201d something they did not learn properly the first time. When students study, sometime they are not really study but only skimping through the materials. Their minds are somewhere in the \u201ccloud\u201d or they may dream about the girl in class. They only really learn when they have to prepare for tests. In that case, they put in some efforts, concentrate on the materials, and \u201cpray\u201d that they will pass the test.<\/p>\n

In software development, developers know that they must fix defects as soon as possible. Postponing to fix a defect until later will create disaster in a project. It can take ten times or hundred times more efforts to fix a defect than fixing it the first time it was found. Failing to learn what you are taught each day is a defect. It can take ten times or hundred times more efforts to learn all the materials that accumulate for many weeks than learning it the day it was taught. By failing to learn, you will fail the test. That is why some students have to cheat on tests and learn a bad habit of cheating themselves.<\/p>\n

No college students want to cheat. Cheating is a symptom of fear, the fear of failure. Why do they fear? Because they do not learn well enough. There is a simple technique to help students to learn better: You must read class materials BEFORE come to class. If you do not understand something you can ask the professor during the class. By listening carefully to the\u00a0 professors DURING class and review what you have learned previously, you will learn more. You should also take short note on important things that the professor teaches in class. AFTER class, you should immediately find a quiet place to review all the materials, including the note that you took in class to improve your learning. By that time, you really know the material well and can recall them when needed. This \u201cThree times learning\u201d technique is very effective and proved to be working well for most of my students.<\/p>\n

Not learning something in class on the day it is taught is a defect that must be fixed immediately. Do not delay it any time longer. Do not pile new material on top of old materials that you did not learn. It will overwhelm you before a test. If you do not understand something, go ask the professor immediately and do whatever it takes to learn it on that same day before continue on. Ask questions in class. If needed, ask the professor after class to explain it to you. Read the textbook carefully and write some short note to review later. Never let any material floating to the next day without learning it well. Tomorrow is too late to learn it as you will have new thing to learn.<\/p>\n

In every college there are some easy classes and some very difficult classes. You go to college to get educated as it prepares you to deal with more difficult things in life. By invest extra effort required to learn difficult concepts, you are also learning how to deal with difficult things in life. By learning how to solve problems in college, you are also preparing yourself to solve more difficult problems in life. Students who let their minds wonder without learning will find themselves becoming lost as the course continues. Cramming all night before a test will create more harms. Cheating during the test would be worst.<\/p>\n

If you learn well every day then the end of the year exam would not be a stressful situation. You will not have to study hard because you already know the materials. While everyone else was cramming, studying and praying, you will look over your note to review and refresh your mind before the test. That should be how a good learning habit really is. Otherwise why keep reading and reading and try to relearn everything at the end of the year?<\/p>\n

Some students told me that college is the time to enjoy because after that you have to work. My view is the opposite, I told them that college is the time to work because after that you can enjoy. Some student argued that not learning well is normal because they can relearn and catch up. My view is in that case, they have to go back and re-learn the old material when the rest of the class is moving on to the new materials. They may not learn the new material well if it builds on the old material because they do not learn the old material well enough, so they keep falling behind further. By the end of the year, they have to re-learn everything that they must learn. But because they cram at the last minute, they will forget most of the things after the test. In that case, why would they go to college if they have not learn anything?<\/p>\n

You only have four years in college but the entire life for other things. What you learn in college is to prepare you for your life after college. You can learn something in four years or you will have to relearn it many times later in life, and it would require you to put in more efforts, more time, and it may cost you more.<\/p>\n

My advice is to put in the effort to learn your material well enough, to get good grades in all your classes now so you do not have to do it again. Much of the materials you learn in later year are build on earlier materials. If you do well in the first year of college, you will be well prepared to learn new material in your second year. But if you do not do well in the first year then you go into your second year with an unstable foundation, making it much harder to do well later. By enjoy a little, go to party a little in the first year you will have to work a lot harder later to catch up. It will be stressful and only few will be able to catch up, most will fail. By preparing and put in the effort when entering college, you will have plenty of time to enjoy later after college. With knowledge and skills, you will be able to get good job, you will have a good career and a bright future. By succeed in college, you will make your family proud and you will be able to contribute more to your society.<\/p>\n
