Looking for job<\/p>\n

Every year around January time, fourth-year students are beginning to look for job as they will be graduating soon. Many students told me: \u201cI like to work for Microsoft\u201d or \u201cI would be very happy if Facebook hire me\u201d or “My dream is to work for Google or Apple…”<\/p>\n

Of course, working for those companies is good, given their reputation and their salaries but I often advise students to avoid focusing only on a single place of employment. It is better and more effective to expand your job search efforts to many companies, both large and small. The simple reason: The chance to get those \u201cDream jobs\u201d is small because every top student in the world is also doing that, and competition is fierce. Every software student that I know wants to work for Facebook or Google or Microsoft. A manager in Google told me that they received several thousand applications per month from all over the world and it took hundred people to sort them out. At the same time, an owner of a smaller software company said that he had to advertise in many places just to get enough applicants. His company is not well known as Google or Facebook, but he made several hundred million dollars a year and has several thousand software engineers working for him. He said: \u201cMy offer is similar to Google or Microsoft but I had much fewer applicants.\u201d He is not alone, many owners told me similar stories because their companies are not well known, it does not mean they are less valuable or not a good place to work for.<\/p>\n

Of course, I certainly advise that you do everything you can to get to one of the top companies. However, do not to put all of your emotional, your efforts, and dreams in one place. Be optimistic but check your expectations realistically. Sometime, the reality of working at those \u201cDream companies\u201d may not match your hopes and dreams that many of you have imagined. I had many students who work at those companies. Some tell me that their experience is not that wonderful as they thought. The fierce competition at these companies has created an atmosphere that some people would find stressful. One student explained: \u201cI got paid very well but I also worked like a slave. Everybody put in 80 hours a week, if you work less; they considered that you were lazy. If you did not keep up with people there, you will be eliminated. Many people worked Saturday and Sunday too. Basically, they lived there and have no lives of their own. Beside the title that you are working for a well known company, it is just a job, like any other job. If you want to get rich, start your own company else the \u201cgetting rich\u201d by working for big company is an illusion. Even you get good salary but the people who get rich are the owner, not you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I know that some graduates only narrow their job search on a few companies simply because they do not know of others. Many do not doing enough research to find similar companies in their local area. Students often hear of some big, well known companies but rarely know about some steadily growing smaller companies in their area. Because the shortage of skilled workers, the job opportunities are no longer locate in one place, one city or one country but many places. As many global technology companies are expanding their search for skilled workers everywhere, do not overlook this opportunity. If you have good foreign language skills in addition to your technical skills, there is a good chance that you can find job with those companies.<\/p>\n

Unless you are determined to work for a top company, it might make more sense to go after some of the smaller and lesser-known companies that other students are ignoring. Ask a school counselor to help you find these local companies. Some schools do have good relationship with local companies and they are glad to accept you instead of students from unknown schools. It is really up to you to plan your future career. You may want to focus your efforts entirely on one or two top companies or a list of many companies, large and small, local and international. It is your decision but never forget that looking for job is a full time job. You must put your efforts in and aggressively searching because the next few months will determine your future career. Please do not wait until you graduate then go look for job, it will be too late. You must be ready to look for job NOW.<\/p>\n
