Old jobs, new jobs<\/p>\n

In the past several weeks, almost all newspapers in the U.S and Europe were focus on a single issue: Job and unemployment. Many people blamed it on globalization and outsourcing where lower cost countries were taken away jobs from western countries. The main causes are not just globalization, where things can be relocated across borders easily but also the advancement of technology that keep replacing labor with machines.<\/p>\n

In the past, workers with a high school education could get an average job, and earned an average salary. Today, most jobs require a college education with specific skills. During this transition, many people were lost and fell victims to changes in the job market. Many hope that governments can do something to help. Many politicians have made promises just to win election. However, they cannot do much because it is not in their control. If we look back at the transition from agriculture age to industrial age, there were many people, mostly farmers were victims. They lost their farms, their lands, their way of earn a good living as they were not prepared for the transition. They did not have information or being warned so it was a big surprise. The situation today is different because there are many information and warnings but many refuse to believe in it. As long as they still have jobs, they do not worry. If bad thing happen, they blame it on something else. However, young people should know better. They have access to much information so they could make the right decision.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, many do not pay attention, they only use technology for entertainment such as video games, music and follow newest fashions.<\/p>\n

Today companies are transitioning from industrial age to information age where robotic systems can replace human, automate software can make things happen faster. The prices for these technologies are getting cheaper every year making them more affordable to everybody. It is technology that destroys \u201cold jobs\u201d and creates \u201cnew jobs\u201d but people have not recognized it yet. According to an industry study: “Since 2000, factories have lay off many workers and created a huge number of unemployment but new jobs could not be created fast enough to balance it. Due to automation, more factories were so efficient that the industry closed about one third of their existing factories but still have better outputs and profits, Of course when factories closed, millions of jobs were lost forever.<\/p>\n

Despite what governments and politicians said, many of the \u201cold jobs\u201d will never come back. When the automation of factories is completed, many jobs that was outsourced to lower cost countries will also gone too. Today technology has replaced many things, including people. Let me give you a simple example. Last month, I went to a restaurant in Boston. Instead of having someone came to my table to take order, the restaurant had iPads installed on every table. Customers can select from a menu with beautiful pictures on the iPads and order foods directly. Customers also pay directly using credit cards on the iPads. The only people work in that restaurant is people who cook in the kitchen and people who bring foods to your table. The owner told me: \u201cFew months ago, I need 25 workers, now I only need 10. I save a lot of money. I invested in the iPads and the software but within few months, I break even and now profit from it. With automation, I do not have to deal with hiring, training, firing workers. I also do not need to worry about a cashier and counting money because customers pay directly using credit cards and the payment go direct to my bank. He laughed: \u201cNo need accounting\u201d.<\/p>\n

About half of the factories in western countries are now using robots, especially heavy industries where these robots work 24 hours nonstop and productivity has been increased several times better than before. One manager said: \u201cWe used to have several thousand workers but now we only need few hundreds. Most operate light equipments and control these robots. If all factories are fully automated, several hundred million jobs will be gone overnight. Of course, there will be million new jobs created but they require a complete different knowledge and skills. I believe we could complete the transition in the next ten years.\u201d I asked him: \u201cWhat happen to the workers?\u201d He said: \u201cThat is not my problem; my company is not a charity organization. If they do not have the skills, they will not have the job that is simple.\u201d<\/p>\n
