Today college students do not use pencil, most use laptop and if they have to write, they use ballpoint pen. I was more surprised when he could not use that pencil anymore, he put it back on a small bag where he had many pencils, all of them short and seemed like they have been used before. Pencil is relatively cheap and often used until the last few inches short then you throw it away. I thought that he was a poor student who could not afford to buy pen so the next day, I gave him a package of six ball point pens and said: “You may want to use these pens, it will last for the whole year so you do not have to use pencil anymore.”

Prasad thanked me for the pens then explained to me why he preferred to use pencils. He said: “I have pens but I like to use pencil because it reminds me of something important that change my life.” It turned out that Prasad came from a very wealthy family. His father owned several companies and he has all the luxury things such as music gadgets, flat screen TV, laptop, iPhone, iPad, motorcycles, designer clothes and he often go to parties during the weekend with children of the rich people until one day …

He said: “She was a sweeper at an elementary school. Her husband died few years after her marriage. She did not have any relatives in the area. She struggled with the responsibility of raising her children so she work as a school sweeper. For the past 40 years, she swept classrooms at the elementary school. Her meager salary was just enough to give her and her children two meals a day. She was allowed to live in a small hut behind the school. However she always wanted to help others but as a very poor person, she had nothing to give.”

Prasad continued: “As college student, we often volunteer to do social works. Few years ago, several of us was sent to the elementary school to help with school activities. I was assigned to read stories to the children. I picked up a book from the school library, it happened to be about Gandhi. As children gathered around me in the school auditorium, I began to read: “Gandhi used to write many letters. One day, Kalelkar, a famous Indian author, saw him writing with a tiny pencil and immediately offered Gandhi a bigger pencil from his pocket. Gandhi politely said that he didn’t need it. The next day, he saw Gandhi scrambling to find his pencil and Kakelkar again offered him a pencil saying, ‘Your pencil was so small anyway.’ Gandhi gently replied, ‘But a child had given me that pencil.’ And he carried on the search for that small pencil. What Gandhi taught was as a poor country, we must be frugal. We should not waste things and behave like other richer countries…”

He smiled: “The story was short as it was written for elementary students. It was not important to me at that time but what I did not pay attention was the sweeper woman also listened to my reading. The story that I read had an impact on her. She immediately thought “ I sweep schools every day and I saw all kinds of small pencils that children throw away. Why don’t I collect those and give them to poor children who cannot afford pencils so they could learn how to write and draw.” You need to know that even today, poverty in India is still a major issue with millions of children live in slums and never go to school. So the sweeper woman began to collect pencils, erasers, sharpeners, and any miscellaneous things that she found. Every time her bag gets full, she brought it to the slum to give away to the needy. That was her ritual and she has been doing it since.”

“Early this year, we went back to that elementary school again. When she saw me, she thanked me for giving her an idea that for many years she had been thinking about how to help others but did not know how. I was surprised when she told me her story, she insisted that I come over to her hut for a meal. I was not able to come on that day but promised to come back the next day just to please an old woman. She had cooked for me a simple but wonderful meal. There I was, a rich college student who often spend hundred dollars just for a weekend party, sat in a small hut with an old woman who made less than few hundred dollars a year. I listened to her story with tears in my eyes. Now more than ever, I recognized the wisdom of that short Gandhi’s story and I realized the compassionate for others from this poor school sweeper. And as I was leaving, she handed me a small almost ripped plastic bag. I opened and saw those small pencils, erasers and pencil sharpeners. She said: “I would go to the slum and handled over to the poor children. Lately, I had arthritis and could not walk to the southwest of the city (Where the slum located) so would you do me a favor by doing that for me since you have a motorcycle.”

Prasad concluded: “It was hard to maintain my emotion in the presence of something so generous and so valuable. Please understand that since I was born, I always had everything that I wanted. I never experienced hungry or poverty. Yes, in India, we have two worlds, the rich and the poor. I was lucky to come from the rich side because of my family but this experience has taught me a valuable lesson about life. No matter whether you are rich or poor, generosity and compassion for others are important. You do not have to be rich to give to others. As long as you are still concerning about others, your heart is pure. Of course, I fulfilled my promise to her by distributed her gift to poor children in the slum. Since then, I never throw away anything away, including small and used pencils that I had. I kept them in my bag so I can also give away to poor children too. Her humbled action has changed my life, she has changed my thinking about life and eventually my behavior also changed completely. My parents were glad that I did much better in school and stopped go to weekend parties.” The humble giving of the poor school sweeper had a certain power that simply cannot be described. I felt it, everyone in class felt it. I noticed that after Prasad’s story, many students seemed to be more carefully about their habits in class too.

Vài tháng trước khi tôi dạy ở Ấn Độ, tôi để ý rằng Prasad Mehta, một sinh viên đại học năm thứ tư thường viết …

[31

post-1712","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-cac-van-de-khac
["GET
