Today, many students enter college without any preparation, they just follow the trend. As the trend indicates the next step after high school is college then they enter college without a clear direction or career plan. That is why the number of first year students having problems is increasing the past few years. Many failed classes and quit school; some struggled and have to repeat classes; some barely passes exams then having problem in the second year due to their weak first year foundation. There are many reasons: Some are not mature enough to handle college works; some are confused on what to study and easily distracted by other activities. The main cause is the lack of preparation and career objectives. Not long ago, students often follow their parents\u2019 careers but today it changes as technology and globalization connect the world, and give students more choices.<\/p>\n

College students today are the first generation that has been raised with the internet. Some know how to take advantage of this tool to learn about the field of study and the job market. Since there are many opportunities all over the world, it is difficult to make decision on what to study. If you do not know what field to choose, you may want to try something to see whether you like it or not. Given the fact that students often change their fields of study about 3 times in college, you could enroll in a few classes to see which one fit you the most. However, you should do it in your first year because you need to make up your mind before entering the second year. If you are not sure, you may want to visit your school\u2019s career counselor, and find out what suggestions they have for exploring a number of career paths. They may be able to suggest courses, or activities that may help you to make decision.<\/p>\n

However, it is your choice. You need to focus on yourself and on your passion. Do not worry about what other people will think. Do not worry about going against the trends or about being judged. Nobody knows you more than you. You need to ask yourself what you want to do in your life. That will give you some information about who you really are, and what you should study. You must make decision in your first year, else it is too late. There is no single perfect choice but many alternatives. If you are waiting for perfect circumstances then you need to know that perfection does not exist. Someday you will realize that you have wasted a lot of time waiting for it.<\/p>\n

All career plans are subject to change as life seldom runs along a predictable path. That is why you need a flexible career plan to account for changes in job market, the economy, globalization and technology. All can affect your current field of study. Be prepared for whatever comes if you keep a positive attitude and expanding your skills whenever needed. What you study today is the foundation for everything you do in the future. A career objective does not end once you get a job but it is a life-long effort. When you have a job, take control of your career by continuous learning. Only you can decide what choices are best for you. You need to know what training and education will increase your value and your happiness.<\/p>\n

Part of planning a career is determining what field you might like to work in after graduate. Today the world is transitioned to the \u201cInformation Age\u201d where technology dominates many things. You may want to explore the wide range of degree fields within science, technology, engineering, computing, and mathematics, medical and healthcare. In my opinion, these are your best choices. With globalization, the chance is that you may not work for local company but global company so knowing a foreign language such as English is necessary. You need to know that beside the field of study, types of degree are also important so you must decide whether to pursue a Bachelor, master or Ph.D.<\/p>\n

The decision to work toward one type of degree or another is very important. For some fields, advanced degree is needed; in other fields it is a choice based on your career goals. For example, if you would like to become an Assistant Nurse, a two-year associate degree is appropriate. If you want to be a Registered Nurse, you will need a master’s degree. The different types of degrees can sometimes be confusing so you may want to check with your school for better information.<\/p>\n

It does not mean other field is no longer important but it is based on the concept of \u201cReturn on investment\u201d. It takes seven to ten years to get degrees in Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dental but only four years in Engineer, Computing and Business. A five-year experienced software engineer make about the same as a recent graduate Medical doctor.
