Many students set goals when they enter college but then ignore them over time. When ask, the typical answer is: \u201cThing changes\u201d. To achieve your goals, you must be certain that you will be able to achieve them; else it is a waste of effort. If you are not sure about what to set, it means you are not serious about it or not really want it. If you have doubt or feel uncertain, you will let others distract you from your study goals then you may not achieve them. Do not let it happen to you.<\/p>\n

If you set any goals, you must make sure that you will achieve it. You must make sure that the goal is something that you really want, not just something looks good in writing. Having a goal in mind will help you set the direction to move forward. Do not set too many goals at one time; you will forget what they are. You should set no more than 3 goals at a time and replace them only when you have achieved them. It would be better to write down your goals on a notebook or on your computer where you can see it daily. It helps you to monitor your progress toward each goal until you achieve it. Writing down your goals creates the roadmap for you to follow. The more focused you are on your goals the more likely you are to accomplish them.<\/p>\n

Having goal will also help you to planning your activities each day. You must develop a habit to complete all planned activities for that day. Once you have this habit, you will be amazed to see the effect and momentum that will help you to achieve whatever you want later. When I was in high school, I read about this daily planning from a book that I did not remember the name. I practiced it by organize all activities that I will do for that day and wrote them on my notebook. It is a schedule that I set for myself. Each night before went to bed, I checked that schedule to see if I missed anything. In the beginning, it was bad as I missed a few but I determined to keep trying. Within a week, it got better and after few weeks, I completed all my planned activities. This self-discipline to follow a daily planning helped me in high school, in college, in graduate school, in my research, in the industry, and throughout my life. Because of this discipline, I can complete more things each day. It became a habit for me and helped me to be very efficient in what I do.<\/p>\n

As I often wrote in my blog, students go to college to study, to get educated. However, sometime it is difficult to study by yourself.\u00a0 It is better study in group. A study group must consist of at least two people but no more than five, preferably with someone who also have similar study goals. The encouragement you can receive from each other will serve as a strong support that will help you to keep going even when you feel like giving up. As a group, you should meet at least once a week for several hours. Each member should commit to show up and do the required preparation prior to the meeting. Members must take turn to be a facilitator who responsible for keeping the group to stay focuses on the study within each session and do not waste time on something else. The facilitator also sends reminder email on time and location to meet and the topic of the study session. If a member missed few meetings, the person is not serious and should be removed. If a member comes but unprepared, it will impact the effectiveness of the group.<\/p>\n

When I formed my college study group, we often divided the weekly works among members. Each summarized the key concepts and created a one page summary for the group. During the meeting, we took turn to present the concept to the group for review and discussion. It started with review the class lecture materials and key concepts so anyone who did not understood can ask questions or raise issues. This was how we shared knowledge with each others. After that, we took turn to present the concepts, theories, problems and issues on each section that we were assigned to. If we did not know something well, we wrote it down so we could ask the professor on the next class. We set aside about ten minutes at the end of each session for a quick review and summary of our group study session. I found that group study was very effective and productive and highly recommend all of you to form your group. By study in group, you also learn more about teamwork and how to deal with people. It is a lifelong experience.<\/p>\n

To succeed in college, it is important to establish your personal study goals in regards to your education. You should take some time to reflect on what you enjoy doing and studying, and what you are interested in. What are your goals in schools? What are your goals in life? What are your plans to achieve them? Knowing yourself, and your reason for being in college, will eliminate all the self-doubt and uncertain that might arise when you enter college.<\/p>\n

Remember, you are not the only one who is benefited from your college education. As you develop your knowledge and skills, you also enrich the lives of your parents as they also feel accomplished by raising you to be an educated person, who can make the right decision for your life, and contribute to your family, your society, and your country.<\/p>\n
