“College women, go study IT”<\/p>\n

2012 is a good year for in Engineering and Information Technology (IT) graduates because there are lots of jobs available. It seems every company wants to hire IT workers and some of them have to go overseas to hire because of the shortage of IT workers in the U.S.<\/p>\n

According to a news report, many oversea new hires were women because there were not enough women in the IT industry and companies want to balance this gap. The report advised: \u201cIf you are college women, go study IT.\u201d The reason: only one in every 10 IT graduates is a woman and getting more women is a priority for the industry.<\/p>\n

Sheryl Sandberg, the chief operating officer of Facebook said: “The trends are clear. Technical skills are in high demand. There is huge shortage of software engineers who can build products like Facebook. And women need to have their fair share in those areas.\u201d This declaration carries a powerful message because Ms Sandberg, who holds the top position in Facebook, after Marc Zuckerberg, is the multi-billion dollars woman. She is ranked number five on the list of most powerful women in the world.<\/p>\n

In the interview with newspapers, she said that her top priority is to convince more women to join her in the world of high technology. She said: \u201cThese jobs pay more; there are more jobs available, because technology company needs you. If you want to make more money, go into technology. Today software engineers make an average $102,000 a year. Yet women make up just 13 percent of the workers so I want to change that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another woman, Jocelyn Goldfein, the Director of Engineering at Facebook, said: \u201cIt is a shock when I walk into a computer classroom and I am the only woman there. Young people do not have any idea of what software engineer is. Most images they get from Hollywood are about hackers breaking into computer to do bad things or stupid computer \u201cNerd\u201d sitting all day in from of a computer playing video games. The real work of software engineering is not like that. Once young girls start seeing women as role models in this field, then it is a lot easier to feel they belong in that field.\u201d<\/p>\n

Among thousands of IT workers hired from China and India this year by U.S companies, over 45% were women. A senior hiring manager said: “I don’t think they have to be the best programmers. It is about balancing the workforce and gives everybody a fair chance. Since we cannot find enough IT women in U.S, the logical thing is to find them in other countries.\u201d Among companies that actively hiring in foreign countries are Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Twitter, and LinkedIn.Sheryl Sandberg said: \u201cGetting more women into the industry is only a beginning, what I would like to see are more women competing for my job. If we can get more women to move up in their careers we can really make a big difference. And I want to make sure the progress happens at every level of society.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today women already occupied several top positions in technology industry. The CEOs of IBM, HP, Yahoo, and Xerox are all women.<\/p>\n
