A student wrote to me: \u201cI am an entrepreneur who has a passion for money, do you think that will be enough of motivation to start my own company?”<\/p>\n

Answer: No. You need passion about technology, market opportunity, or about building a good product than about making money. If you have passion for money, you can go work for a Bank, where you can count a lot of money. If you have passion for money, you can go work in the stock market, where you can see all types of money transaction. If you have passion for money, you can go work for large import\/export business where there are a lot of money in accounting and finance.<\/p>\n

Being an entrepreneur is about having passion to create new ideas, new products to make thing better. For example, Steve Jobs makes computers better, makes phones better, makes e-books better. He has made many things better and easier to use. Of course, he also has a lot of money but money come after the ideas and products when they become things that people want to buy.<\/p>\n

If you think too much about money it will determine how much of it you should have. Your attitude toward money affects your emotions and your motivations. Money motivates people when they feel that they do not have enough. Above a certain level, it is no longer a motivator. Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Sergey Brin, Marc Zuckerberg all make $1 dollar a year on salary. They do thing because they love it, not because of how much they made. In other words, when you have enough money, you do not think about it but when you do not have much, you think about it all the time. It is NOT passion but obsession.\u201d<\/p>\n

The effect money has on your life depends on your attitude toward it. If you feel that you have too little, money can become an obsession for you. It can dominate your thinking, feelings and actions. Sometime people would do anything, including involving in unethical things or crimes just to get money. Problems with money are the main reason for many business failures, marriage broke up, friendships ruining, and stressful illnesses of all kinds.<\/p>\n

As student, you must learn to deal with life as it is, not as you wish it could be. Most people live in a world of self-delusion with regard to money. They wish, they hope, and they pray about having a lot of money and they believe it is their passion but deep in their hearts, they know it will never happen. You need money to buy things, laptop, mobile phone, motorcycle, clothes, food and most of the things in life. In that case you use money, you own money but do not let money own you. Money has energy of its own and it is largely attracted to people who treat it well. Money tends to flow toward those people who can use it in the most productive ways to produce valuable goods and services, and who can invest it to create employment and opportunities that benefit others. At the same time, money flows away from those who use it poorly, who are selfish, or who spend it in non-productive ways.<\/p>\n

If you want to be an entrepreneur, you should have passion to create good ideas, build great products, and develop great company that will last a long time. If you only think about make money for yourself than you should be a financial, a money lender, or a stockbroker. The country needs more good companies, not more bankers or stockbroker. I do not know how many people learn about the financial crisis? How many people learn anything about the housing crisis? Money is only an outcome of a good company, but it is not the sole purpose of a company. It is much better to build a good product, good company and see what happens than to do something just for the money.<\/p>\n
