The app economy<\/p>\n

According to a new industry study, there are over half million new jobs created in the U.S. because of smart phones, tablets and other new mobile devices. Many economists called it the “App Economy,” where there were 570,000 jobs filled by app developers in 2011. This new \u201cApp Economy\u201d generated $20 billion in revenue based on number of download sales last year.<\/p>\n

An economist said: \u201cFor years, we always focus on how to create more jobs in manufacturing but we were wrong. We never know that new technology can create more jobs that fast. There are several million apps created after the introduction of the iPhone. Everything in the mobile apps has blossomed into a new job creation for our economy without any help from government. There are many people develop and sell their apps over the internet that economists do not know. This \u201cApp Economy\u201d is growing very fast, create a lot of new jobs and the number of jobs are likely to increase in coming years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another economist explained: \u201cThis is a new market, a new thing; it only started four years ago with the iPhone. Nobody pay attention to it until now. Most economists never even think that mobile operating systems, such as Android, iOS, BlackBerry and Windows Phone can create jobs faster than manufacturing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The study investigated over 500,000 apps in Apple store, traced them to 120,000 app developers and interviewed them. They found that 67% of them had full time jobs in software industry but they develop apps at home and sold them via App store. Only 53,000 developers were making living solely by develop apps. Many admitted that they could make more if they work for software company but prefer to be independent, have their own company, even it is a one-person company. Many live comfortably by making $67,000 to $85,000 a year. Only few made over a million because of high competition. One developer said: \u201cFew years ago, there were fewer apps in the market, I had over a thousand download per week and make $40,000 per app a year. Since I had several apps, I did very well. Now, it is more difficult because too many people building apps.<\/p>\n

Few years ago, most apps were simple computer games but today business companies need apps to reach customers. Just like websites few years ago to do online business, today it is mobile business and it creates a large demand for people with mobile app skills. It is estimated that the \u201cApp Economy\u201d is growing to be second in size to the programming sector. An economist said that the \u201cApp Economy\u201d is the “construction industry of the 21st century.” He found that on the week day, newspapers in the U.S posted over 300,000 jobs require mobile app skills. Over the week-end the list gets to 450,000. It means that training mobile app skills can help people get jobs faster than other vocational trainings. He compared the average seven-week training of mobile app developers to the three to six months training of manufacturing workers and concluded that government need to pay attention to this new area regarding job training and job creation rather than stay with the \u201cOld thinking\u201d of manufacturing is the key driver of economic growth.<\/p>\n
