It means you are qualified for the position so companies want to know more about you and decide whether or not they want to hire you. Typically for every position, companies would interview two or three persons so you have 50% or 33% chance to get the job. It is very important to be prepared for the job interview.\u00a0Students often share with me about mistakes they make during their job interviews and why they do not get the job that they want. Following are some of their mistakes:<\/p>\n<p>A student told me: \u201cI really want to work for Google, so I am very happy that they call me in for an interview. However I have a quiz during that week so I asked to change the interview date until next week. Although I did well in that interview, the manager told me that the position was filled by somebody who came in the week before, so I missed that chance.<\/p>\n<p>My advice: You should NEVER postpone a job interview. Company often selects few candidates for job interview and if you are not there they select someone else. In this competitive job market you should seize the opportunity immediately. It is better to ask your professor to allow you to take the quiz at later date but NEVER ask the company to wait until you are ready.<\/p>\n<p>A student regretted: \u201cI did\u00a0so well in the interview. I answered all questions correctly and when they asked me if I have any question, I asked about the salary and suddenly things turned out uncomfortably. In the end, I did not get the job. Should I discuss salary during the interview?<\/p>\n<p>My advice: NEVER be the first to discuss about salary. It means you are concerned more about money than anything. It is a signal that you may switch job when someone offer better salary. Even if hiring manager want to know your salary requirements you should never mention any NUMBER. The better answer is: \u201cYou know my qualification and I would be pleased to accept any reasonable offer.\u201d Here is the logic: If the hiring manager plan to offer you $120,000 but you says $100,000 then he may think: \u201cThis person may not worth what I think, maybe he is not that good.\u201d But if you say $130,000 then he may think: \u201cHe asks more than what I could pay so I should get somebody else since he may reject my offer.\u201d \u00a0In both situations, you will not get the job.<\/p>\n<p>A student explained: \u201cI had a job interview with Apple; I was so excited and arrived about half an hour earlier. The interviewing managers were not happy and although I did well but I did not get the job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My advice: Arriving late to a job interview is a very bad thing. But arriving too early ahead of time is also equally bad. Even if the interviewing managers may ask you to wait but they have to be in a hurry to complete what they are doing to interview you. If they are busy, they can be angry and it is impossible to get hired if they are angry at you. If you arrive in any interview more than 10 minutes early, wait outside and do NOT come in until the time. A half an hours ahead of schedule is too early and could be a signal that you are pushing them to do something for you.<\/p>\n<p>A student said: \u201cI put many things on my resume so it looks good. During the interview, I was asked many questions about them that I could not answer so I did not get the job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My advice: You must read each job description carefully and modify your resume to fit the job requirements with your skills. Do not put everything in your application, especially things that you do not know well as it may be considered that you are a liar. For example, when a job listing: \u201cMust have five years of experience in Database\u201d it means applicant must truly be an expert with five years of experience. If you do not qualify than do not apply. In a job interview, they will ask you on what you wrote on the application. If you do not know them well, they think that you are incompetent as you are wasting your time and their time.\u00a0 Please note that the interviewers may remember you, especially when they believe that you are not an honest person. It may hurt your chance to be considered for future job at that company.<\/p>\n<p>A student complained: \u201cI applied for the information system management position. I was well prepared for the technical questions but during the interview, they asked me about things completely unrelated to what I learned in school such as globalization, flat world, economics events in Europe, and the financial crisis. Although I did well on the technical area but I did not get the job.<\/p>\n<p>My advice:\u00a0Today most companies expect more from graduates than just technical. You do not have to be an expert but at least know something about what happened in the world because we are living in a connected world. It is an indication that you are aware of the world around you. A person with global knowledge is often considered a concerned person, a thoughtful person and knowledgeable person. It is important for students to develop a good reading habit on general topics to broaden their knowledge. Without some basic knowledge about the world events, you may be considered \u201cIgnorance\u201d and do you think a company would hire an ignorance person?<\/p>\n<p>A student said: \u201cDuring the interview, they ask me about professors in school. I did not like one professor because he was arrogant and not nice to me so I told them about my feeling. Although I did well in technical areas, I did not get hired. Is it something that I said?<\/p>\n<p>My advice: You NEVER say something negative about anything during the interview. If you do not like your professor, keep it to yourself. When your interviewer asks you about other people, always say something nice about them such as: \u201cI am very happy to work in a team as I work well with everybody.\u201d Or \u201cI am very grateful to learn from Professor X, he taught me a lot of things.\u201d A negative thing about anyone means you may not do well in a team, and you could say something bad about your manager, if he hires you too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A student said: \u201cBefore the interview, I was nervous and probably not say something nice to the receptionist. Although I did very well in the interview but I did not get the job. I found out later that the receptionist reported me to the manager.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My advice: You should be polite with everybody you meet during your job interview, including secretary or receptionist. Sometime their comments can change their manager\u2019s opinion about you. Managers often ask opinions about you from people with whom you had contact during the interview. Imagine a receptionist said: \u201cThat young man is arrogant and has a bad attitude toward everybody\u201d or his secretary reported: \u201cHe is very rude toward me.\u201d Do you think a manager would hire you if you insult HIS people?<\/p>\n<p>A student said: \u201cI have an interview scheduled immediately after my soccer games. Although I arrived on time and answered most questions well, I did not get the job. I believe I did not look good after the soccer games.<\/p>\n<p>Advice: How could you go to a job interview immediately after playing soccer? Which one is important to you? Did you take a bath afterward? Did you comb your hair? The first impression people have about you is your look and your clothes. If you look sweaty without combing your hair, you do not impress anyone. Please pay attention to the appearance details. If you do not care about how you look and dress sloppily what do you think other would think of you? \u00a0Technical skills are important, but so is appearance.
