The new Education plan in India<\/p>\n

Last week, Ravi, my friend in India showed me some pictures of the world largest university: IndiraGandhiNationalUniversity. From the picture, it looks like any university with administrative buildings, lecture halls, library, and classrooms. What surprised me is the enrollment. This university has 4 million students. The largest university in the U.S has about 40,000 to 50,000 students so it is difficult to imagine an university with 4 million students.<\/p>\n

Ravi explained: \u201cThe university has several branch campuses located in different areas throughout India. Not all students attend regular classes. Some takes online classes; some take classes via TV channels; some take classes by listen to lectures over radio station if they live in remote areas without internet connection. This is the solution to India\u2019s modern higher-education model to develop skilled workers for a globalized world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ravi was excited: \u201cWe need to continue our rapid economic growth. India has a lot of poor people, especially in small and remote villages. Young people there are not getting opportunities to go to universities so we go to them. In the new education initiative, poor people living in remote areas and slums, all have direct access to a college education.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIndia\u2019s economy is one of the fastest growing in the world but its population also has increasingly fast. India\u2019s population is projected to reach 1.4 billion people by the year 2026. More people, especially uneducated people could become a burden to the country\u2019s future. That is why the government is trying to educate a new generation to sustain the progress. The major push by the Indian government for mandatory education has made significant improvement in areas where once there were no schools at all. Now, as millions of students graduating from high school and ready to be part of India\u2019s economic progress, the government is finding way to send more of them to college. The plan is to have about 20 million college students by 2020, many will study Information technology and agriculture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ravi said: \u201cWe know that the 21st century belongs to Information Technology (IT). Everything will be controlled and managed by IT and we want to be the IT managers for the world. Of course, many countries have questioned the quality of our universities. We do not say that we are better than anyone. We do not say that we develop top scientists or the best software developers. We only want to get jobs for our people. We want to educate the poor from rural areas, the sons and daughters of farmers. That is why we offer practical training in computers and agriculture, which can lead to better jobs. We know that with technology many things will change. Many things will be automated. Many things will be controlled by machines. Many factories will be operated by robots. We want to participate in it, be a part of it. For many years, we relied on workers to do things by hands, now we want them do it by computer. We have planned to train several million programmers and testers for whoever needs these skills. We know about global shortage of skilled workers and we are responding to those needs.\u201d<\/p>\n

I commented: \u201cThis massive training of people make me concern about the quality and results of this ambitious plan. You cannot simply put people in school and expect that they all will be educated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ravi explained: \u201cWe know that quality is important but it takes time. At this time, we are focusing on providing education and training so our citizens can be productive and our economy can continue to grow. The priority is creating more jobs for young people. For every high tech job that we create, we can multiply it by a factor of eight. Higher paying jobs facilitate about eight supporting jobs. If we have 20 million software jobs, we can create additional 160 million new jobs, which mean hundred millions families can escape poverty. I cannot see any better way of eradicate poverty than education.\u201d<\/p>\n

He seemed more enthusiast: \u201cToday, India has 1.2 billion people, one third are under the age of 14. With proper education, this large population of young workers could be an asset in India\u2019s drive to become a world power. Without education it could be a disaster for social unrest and political unstable. Knowing the potential and the dangerous, India government has responded with an ambitious education plan and building more universities. The effort could help India in its economic competition with China and other Asian countries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ravi concluded: \u201cThis event has never happened in the history of India, or the history of any country. To expand education to hundred million people in ten years is quite an ambitious plan. If India reaches its goals, it could have nearly twice as many college students as does China by the end of the decade. Our new education plan is fulfilling one major goal already as it raising the hope and expectations of a new generation of Indians. For the past twenty years, the dream of young Indian is becoming a software engineer. Everybody know that this is the future. This is the best job, the highest paying job as there is a critical shortage of IT skilled workers. Few years ago, only the rich and middle class people can afford to go to college. Now we are providing many young Indian with an opportunity to go to college so they can get their dream job in the IT industry.\u201d<\/p>\n
