First year students<\/p>\n

Every student goes to college with some expectations. If what happen in school matches their expectations then college experience is likely a positive one. If it is not then it could be an issue. For example, if students come to college on their first week expecting to meet some friends and find themselves in a warm and friendly accommodation, then they are likely to enjoy being there. However, if they could not find someone friendly but face hostilities or indifferences then their first few weeks in college may become a bad experience and that could impact their learning.<\/p>\n

The first year of college is a critical time for students to develop learning skills, meet new friends, and building their own character. If properly guide and support, students could achieve a lot. But if ignore, it could be a minefield that many students will struggle with uncertain future.<\/p>\n

A majority of first year college students are in the 17\u201319-year old age group. Few are matured enough to be responsible for their own. Many are still learning and developing their own characters and may not mature enough to take full responsibility of their actions. To make dramatic change from high school to college is a stressful transition. Many do not know what to expect in terms of enrolling, learning, finding classrooms, making friends, and be part of the college student groups. Even college has support staffs and counselors but these people may not distinguish new students from old students although new students need specific helps and more supports.<\/p>\n

Many first year students told me about their feelings of isolation at university and specifically within their student group. A student said: \u201cI feel very alone and am concerned that I will not make any friends. Everyone else seems to already know somebody and have their own groups. I do not know anyone and I am afraid. Hopefully things will get better in the next few weeks.\u201d Anyone would feel uncomfortable in a new place, especially when they do not know any friends. Of course, to many students, these feelings will go away within few weeks when they are more familiar with the school and make new friends. However, few may still have difficulty adjusting. They are confused and do not know what is expected of them. This is where professors and counselors need needs to pay attention because negative feeling due to mismatch of expectations can be a cause of poor performance and student drop-out. Of course, some students have unrealistic expectations or occasionally, things actually go wrong such as their laptop or mobile phone is stolen then suddenly they feel very negative about the school.<\/p>\n

First year students often experience learning difficulties due to the level of work required from them. The major challenges of college works are the large amount of reading, fewer time to learn, and a lot of note takings, writings and homeworks. Without preparation, students may feel overwhelmed because they are unfamiliar with the teaching and learning methods at university. Many are used to a casual approach in high school where class is small and teachers clearly let them know what to do. They are confused on the level of responsibility that they are expected to take for their own studying in college. Without some advices and supports, this can lead students to become alienated from their new environment which may result in loss of confidence, loss of self-esteem, and may drop out from school.<\/p>\n

Going to college is a major challenge. Many first year students do not have a clear direction about their career yet. Many often choose a particular field of study based on their previous studies in high school rather than knowing what they want to do for their future career. Most college professors do not consider career advice is their job. Many career counselors provide supports only when students come to them. This cause many students take the approach of \u201cTrial and error\u201d where they will take several classes to see what they like and drop what they do not like. Some students select easy classes regardless of the future prospective. It would be better for the school to have an assessment of student skill levels and provide early feedback to guide them toward what is best for them and build their self-confidence and self-esteem. Although every school has an orientation session for new students but it usually too general and not specific enough to solve problems that many first year students have.<\/p>\n

Most first year students are concerned about their learning skills and the amounts of work that they feel necessary for them to succeed in college. They often told me that everything is moving too fast for them to cope. There are many overlapping homeworks from classes that they do not have enough time. Most do not realize that for every one hour in class, they must spend at least two hours of individual study. They do not know how to manage their time accordingly. Since most first years classes are always crowded, professors are very busy and often cannot pay attention students. The fast pace of college courses often add more confusing and sense of frustration to new students.<\/p>\n

First year students are eager to learn more about what will be expected of them. Without clear direction and proper guidance in the first few days or few weeks, some will make mistake and that could be crucial to their university experience. Students who are lacking of preparation, have bad study habits, not managing their time will have very difficult time and probably not do well in the first year. Without a strong academic foundation and improving learning skills, few would complete college. That is why the number of college drop-out has been increasing in the past few years. Especially in Asia where \u201cElimination\u201d or \u201cSelect the best\u201d is still being considered as the key principle of education.<\/p>\n

Every first year student that I met is extremely optimistic about their decision to study at university but anxious about their ability to cope with the demand of college learning. Many have high levels of concern about time management, achieving appropriate level in their studies, and bridging the gap between their previous studies in high school and university experience. There is an urgent need to provide additional supports and guidance to help them to develop their academic self-confidence early at university. While many professors consider their job is to transfer knowledge and not responsible for the development or adjustment of students but I believe as educators, we should. By spending more time in the first few weeks to help them transition to the new environment; by clearly explain to them what we expect; by listen to their concerns and willing to meet with them, either as individual or in group, we can provide some meaningful advices to ensure that, what they experience meets their expectations of what higher education is.<\/p>\n

\u2018Expectation management\u2019 is not easy, as each student will have a different expectation. However, expectations, and the management of these, are very important for students\u2019 achievement. Nothing is more rewarding for us, educators, to see that all of them succeed in their college learning. Nothing is better than seeing a new generation of scholars, of highly educated people who can contribute positively to our society, our country. Only then, we know that we also fulfill our mission of educate students.<\/p>\n
