Finding Job<\/p>\n

Who do you think is more likely to find a job faster: A good student who plan to apply for job after graduate, or an average student who apply for job several months before graduation?<\/p>\n

Based on my conversations with companies, the average student always has the job offer faster every time. The fact is most companies do not wait. Many students do not understand that the job market is not a competition between better and average students but it is based on fulfilling a need. When a company needs workers, they want to fill its needs as fast as possible. People want to tell their manager that they have the needed workers, even they may have to wait few months for the students to graduate. When managers ask their people to do something, they want it done as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

I always advise students to start their job hunting at the beginning of their fourth year to maximize the chances of getting a job offer. They need to let companies as well as other people know about their availability and their readiness to work. Finding job is not about waiting for company to advertise because most good jobs are never advertised as they are filled via different way. I often ask my students: \u201cHow many people know that you are looking for job?\u201d This question is not as easy to answer as it appears. The key components are the word \u201cPeople\u201d and \u201cKnow\u201d. The word \u201cpeople\u201d means someone who can help you and the word \u201cKnow\u201d means they aware that you need their help to get a job. It usually takes more than just a single request for any person to help you in your job search. You must let your relatives, their friends, and everybody that you know that you are looking for job. You have to do it many times so that your name is on their minds when suddenly opportunity comes. This is what I call \u201cActive search\u201d not \u201cPassive search\u201d. Passive search is when you apply for a job when a company advertises it. In that case, you are competing with hundreds of others who also looking for work. Active search is you let everybody know so when they need someone, they think of you. Instead of advertise they hire you. \u201cNetworking\u201d is another term with exactly the same meaning which is let others know that you are looking for job.<\/p>\n

Active search or Networking means you must remind them often that you are looking for job. If you talk to them three months ago and asked them to let you know if there are job opportunities. They may remember or they may not. It is highly probable that they have completely forgotten about you or the types of job that you are seeking. Maybe they think that you already have job since they have not heard anything from you. To really get people to help your job search, you need to be actively reminding them about your efforts.<\/p>\n

Imagine that two old friends meet each other at a party. One person ask: \u201cI have not seen you for quite awhile. How are you doing? The other said: \u201cI am busy because I just start a software company.\u201d The other said: \u201cDo you need any software worker? I know a student who is looking for job. If possible can I have him contact you? What do you think the outcome could be? Would an old friend say: \u201cNo I do not need any worker? Or should he say: \u201cSure, if it is someone you know, I like to see him.\u201d Many good jobs happen that way, no advertising just a few words between people.<\/p>\n

I routinely encourage my students to contact their relatives, their parents\u2019 friends and anyone that they know once each month about the fact that they will be graduating soon and looking for work. I know that many students feel embarrassed about this kind of \u201casking\u201d and fear that they are pestering people too much. Please remember that you are still a young student and you need help. There is nothing wrong about asking for help when you are still in school. It would be worst if you already graduated for several months and still do not find a job yet. By that time somebody may think: \u201cHe already graduated for several months and still could not find job. Maybe he is not smart, maybe he is a bad student.\u201d In that case it is too late. I believe you should overcome this fear and boost your chance of getting job offer when you are still attending school. Start early than you have better chance.<\/p>\n

Last week I encouraged one of my students to email some of her relatives, letting them know she was seeking work as she will be graduating in June and she could use some additional help. She hesitated and delayed for few days. She felt embarrassed. But she finally did it after admitted to me that she “look at the send button for an hour” before she actually hit it to send the message.<\/p>\n

The result? She called me back after three hours: “I have received 8 replies already, as well as 3 job interviews. I did not know that my cousin is working for Google and two of my uncles are managers in large software company. It is only been 3 hours!”. Two weeks later, she got three job offers four months before graduation.<\/p>\n
