Reading books<\/p>\n

Today few college students like to read, which is a mistake. Reading opens your mind to the wonderful world of knowledge. You do not have to read technical books or scientific articles but anything that interest you. I know that while many IT students are serious about technical aspects but there are more that they need to know, especially when they go to work. The IT industry has many technical people but not enough people who possess both the technical and other knowledge such as business, economic, history, global perspective, arts, and humanities.<\/p>\n

As a professor, I often assign books and articles for students to read but I never know if they enjoy reading or they do it because they have to. One of my habits is to sit in the school library watching students choosing books. I often think \u201cThese students are not at the videogame parlors. They are not watching TV or movies but in the library looking for something to read.\u201d It makes me feel happy when I see them checking out books to take home to read. Occasionally, few students ask me if I have something to recommend to them. If they pay attention, they probably can see my eyes flare up. There is nothing bring me more pleasure than recommend books to students, especially not the books that they must read for my class.<\/p>\n

In reading, you discover so many things that you do not know. You also \u201cmeet\u201d many people, heroes and villains, kings and queens in books. You can see old ideas become new and new ideas become old as history unveils itself. When you read, you are travelling in a world of knowledge that has been accumulated for thousands of years. Reading is a positive form of escape, a chance to travel somewhere without having to leave your table. Reading makes far-away countries seem close by, and makes nearby places seem far away. Reading shows you why kingdoms rise and fall, and countries come and go. Reading explains why some people are still being mentioned thousand years after they died. Reading teaches you about hatred, and about love, about friendship and betrayal. Reading also teaches you how to think clearly and be responsible for what you do. Reading explains how the world was flat then round, and now become flat again. Reading shows you how scientific has helped transformed the world and how within just less than a hundred years, human knowledge has increased hundred times more than previous several thousand years.<\/p>\n

Reading is an active mental process that makes you use your brain to think more. Reading provides information that goes deeper and forces you to focus on what you are reading. Unlike internet articles or blogs that may only contain pieces of information. Books tell you the whole story. Unlike TV or movies which are passive, you only watch and follow the acting, by reading books you learn new and complete information and be able to come up with creative ideas. Many studies show that if you do not use your memory then you lose it. Reading more books is a therapy that helps prevent Alzheimer disease. Reading helps you stimulate your brain in a way that it remembers details, facts, themes and characters. If you read a lot of books, you always have something to talk about. You can discuss various novels you read, you can discuss things you are learning in history, in technology and in the business books that you have read. Books are easy to carry with you as you can take them almost anywhere. As such, you can learn almost anywhere too.<\/p>\n

I love to read when I was young. I read a lot of books in high school so when I went to college; I never had any problems with reading assignments. There were a lot of required readings in college but I could read several chapters in an hour when many of my friends need several hours or even days. I contributed my success in college to my reading habit. As you read more books as a source of information, you learn about things that you are not looking for. I learned about global economy when reading books on technology trends. I learned about biology and chemistry from reading books about famous scientists. I learned about history when reading books about sociology. Since so many subjects intertwine, you always learn something new each time you read. Today many books have been digitized and put on the internet. There are so many blogs that can help you learn almost anything that you like, if you are serious about learning.<\/p>\n
