China’s rich people<\/p>\n

According to the Hurun Research Institute, the number of China\u2019s billionaires has grown rapidly despite the ongoing difficulties of the global economy. Last year, China had 189 billionaires but this year the official number is 271 billionaires but the unofficial number could be much more. Since 2007, the Hurun does not list millionaires anymore as they are so many already.<\/p>\n

With China’s construction explosion in the past ten years, the richest person in China is Liang Wengen with $17 billion dollars. He started a construction company in 1989, specialized in heavy construction equipment and large building projects. The second richest person is Zong Qinghou, owner of food and beverage company with $12 billion dollars. It is not a surprise that construction and food are the most profitable business in a country with over billion people. The third billionaire is Robin Li, CEO of Baidu Inc the software search engine company with $9 billion dollars. Since Google withdrawal from the Chinese market last year, Baidu become the dominance in Internet search services there. Among other billionaires, many were getting rich by buying and selling property as their main sources of wealth. Most invest in large building projects such as hotels in resort areas. The age of rich people on the Hurun list is mostly in the 45 to 65 years old. Many were government officials who invest in lands, properties and use their connection to build up their wealth.<\/p>\n

However, there is a new type of young people who grew rich based on their own efforts, without government help and connection, as represented by Robin Li, who started Baidu Company. Robin represents the newly rich, the fastest growing numbers where most millionaires in the 20 to 30 years old are. These young people are the new wave who has not made it to the \u201cbillionaire list\u201d yet but they dominate the millionaire list with over 56%. Most of them are entrepreneurs who started their own technology companies and did very well. Although Hurun does not list the names of millionaires but their research found that there are over 900,000 individuals with personal wealth of $10 million dollars or more in China. Many of them started in information technology area where it does not require a lot of money or connection as in other businesses. Although most of their products are sold and used domestically but some have indicated that they will expand oversea soon.<\/p>\n

While large industries in China such as banking, steel, telecommunications and manufacturing are still state-owned, a growing new wealth being created comes from the hard work and vision of small number of entrepreneurs where the Chinese government allows them to have 100% ownership. These young people who grew up in poverty but witnessed the changing time when China opened its doors for foreign investments. They seized the opportunities to establish their own positions as they understand the potential of what technology can bring and they are willing to take the risk.<\/p>\n

One of the multi millionaires is Robin Chan who is the founder of XPD specializing in video games distribution. While there are many Chinese game companies but they do not have access to global social networks. His company XPD helps unlocks these barriers and allows people to play games on line with others all over the world. XPD helps promote the multibillion-dollar global social-gaming market with hundred million users. He said: \u201cToday many people are playing games on line and the number will continue to increase. China has hundred million people who play video games but the world has several billion people who also play video games. When you connect them together, you have several billion users who are willing to pay you so they can play with each others. This is a huge market.\u201d<\/p>\n
