Current trend in Industry<\/p>\n

Some time I have wondered if companies that hire graduates are ever happy with their college training. Last week a new U.S. government study confirmed that there was a gap between what industry needs and what school are providing. The fact was many state universities were too slow to change, despite complaints from the industry. Many educators firmly established their view that university is not a training place for industry and will not subject to demand from industry. Executives from industry were angry and ordered their people not to hire from such universities and increase the amount of outsourcing and promote more open immigration to hire foreign skilled workers. Unfortunately in this exchange of views, some students become victims as they get squeezed between academic \u201cpurity\u201d and industry \u201creality\u201d.<\/p>\n

The U.S. government study identified the current industry hiring trends where 59% of company are hiring Software Developers and Programmers; 43% are hiring Information System Managers, Service Manager, and Business analysts (Requirements Engineer); 50% are hiring database professionals; 36% hiring System Architects; 46% are hiring system and network security and mobile developers; and 37% needs Software Project Manager.<\/p>\n

Among 800 companies participated in the study, four in ten companies reported that their new hires were not sufficiently prepared to perform jobs within their companies, many had to be retrained for at least 6 months, which were additional cost to companies. There was more concern about current graduates\u2019 lack of knowledge of business and how it work. Another 32% said that there were small gaps in skills which could be trained in few months. Only 9% rated new hires as \u201cwell trained, ready to work\u201d but most of them came from private universities, not state universities where training was in alignment with industry needs. Beyond their technical skills, companies were looking for workers with additional skills in business, people who can see the \u201cbig picture\u201d or understand strategic view rather than just short term.<\/p>\n

There was a concern that countries like China and India are producing roughly ten times the number of technical people than the U.S. but the study have found that these graduates were so poorly trained that it would take them three to four years in the workforce to reach the quality of U.S. trained technical people.<\/p>\n

Among the additional findings are: Rapidly changing technology was the main reason contributing to the skills gap, followed by limited training, obsolete training, and ineffective training.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
