Bill is a senior manager of a large clothing company that outsources works to Asia. He said: \u201cFor many years, China dominated European and US markets for ready-made clothing. China garment industry has about 46 percent of the global market but it is changing now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was surprised: \u201cWhy? I thought China is still the manufacturing center of the world?<\/p>\n<p>He laughed: \u201cIt is changing quickly now. Many factories are leaving because the cost has risen quickly and no longer profitable to outsource there. Clothing business is based on lower labor cost but as the cost has risen we are reducing works in China and move to other lower cost countries. Today Southeast Asia is a better place; it has lower cost than China. Among them Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand are all good but the best is Bangladesh. It has the lowest cost of them all. I think this country will be the next center of garment outsourcing for the world.<\/p>\n<p>I said: \u201cI never think of Bangladesh. It is one of the poorest countries in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explained: \u201cThat is why their cost is the lowest. Last year, our industry outsourced about $20 Billion of ready-made garments to Bangladesh. Garment is the most important industrial sector there. This year we will increase about 20% more and could double it by 2015. Even top brands and fashionable sophisticated clothing companies are also moving to Bangladesh for formal wear and outerwear. Bangladesh\u2019s ready-made-garment industry has over 5,000 factories employing about 6.4 million workers. This country is far ahead of other Southeast Asian countries. It has the highest levels of customer\u2019s satisfactory, highest level of quality for its products, and the lowest cost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked: \u201cWhat will happen to the factories in China? What will happen to garment workers there?<\/p>\n<p>Bill seemed surprised: \u201cWe will end our contracts with their factories there. What happen to them does not concern us. Their workers will find other jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I raised a concern: \u201cBut these are people who making clothes for your company for years. They may not have other skills. If clothing industry moves out, they will be left with no job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bill thought for a minute then shook his head: \u201cThis is business. Few years ago when we moved our factories to China, many clothing workers in the U.S found themselves without jobs. Now the same is happening in China. It is strictly a business decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked: \u201cFew years from now, if the cost in Bangladesh is going up then will you move again?<\/p>\n<p>Bill nodded: \u201cOf course, we will have to find some places that have lower cost, maybe Africa or South America. In global business, you must have quality products at the lowest costs to stay competitive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked: \u201cWhat make Bangladesh better than other South-East Asia countries?<\/p>\n<p>Bill explained: \u201cMany Asian countries have low cost but their transportation is bad. Poor and congested transportations create inefficient times for garments workers and delay deliveries to customers. In this business, you must produce fashionable products at the shortest times possible. Fashion changes quickly, if you get delay and your clothes are out of fashion then you cannot sell them. Some countries have poor energy supply, someday they have electricity, and someday they do not. If we have to rely on backup power generators than it costs more. People begin to protest Apple in the U.S and Europe. Finally Apple has to warn its supplier and threaten to move to another country. Apple is a successful company with exciting products where people standing in line to buy them so the bad publicity may not hurt them much. We cannot afford bad publicity like that. Clothing is a social sensitive business, if our brand is tarnished, people will not buy our products because they have other choices.
