M\u1ed9t s\u1ed1 sinh vi\u00ean tin r\u1eb1ng v\u1edbi b\u1eb1ng c\u1ea5p CNTT h\u1ecd c\u00f3 th\u1ec3 ch\u1ec9 l\u00e0m vi\u1ec7c trong c\u00f4ng nghi\u1ec7p CNTT. \u0110i\u1ec1u \u0111\u00f3 l\u00e0 KH\u00d4NG \u0111\u00fang. V\u1edbi b\u1eb1ng c\u1ea5p CNTT, h\u1ecd c\u00f3 th\u1ec3 l\u00e0m vi\u1ec7c g\u1ea7n nh\u01b0 cho b\u1ea5t k\u00ec ng\u00e0nh c\u00f4ng nghi\u1ec7p n\u00e0o. CNTT l\u00e0 l\u0129nh v\u1ef1c r\u1ea5t r\u1ed9ng v\u1edbi mi\u1ec1n r\u1ed9ng c\u00e1c \u1ee9ng d\u1ee5ng v\u00e0 c\u01a1 h\u1ed9i vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0m. CNTT d\u1eabn l\u00e1i ph\u00e1t ki\u1ebfn trong khoa h\u1ecdc, kinh doanh, ch\u1ebf t\u1ea1o, n\u00f4ng nghi\u1ec7p, gi\u1ea3i tr\u00ed v\u00e0 gi\u00e1o d\u1ee5c. Ng\u00e0y nay vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0m CNTT l\u00e0 trong s\u1ed1 nh\u1eefng vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0m \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c tr\u1ea3 l\u01b0\u01a1ng cao nh\u1ea5t v\u00e0 c\u00f3 tho\u1ea3 m\u00e3n vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0m t\u1ed1t nh\u1ea5t trong c\u00e1c c\u00f4ng nh\u00e2n. V\u1edbi thi\u1ebfu h\u1ee5t tr\u1ea7m tr\u1ecdng c\u00f4ng nh\u00e2n CNTT tr\u00ean kh\u1eafp th\u1ebf gi\u1edbi, c\u01a1 h\u1ed9i ki\u1ebfm vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0 tuy\u1ec7t h\u1ea3o. CNTT l\u00e0 l\u0129nh v\u1ef1c c\u00f3 t\u01b0\u01a1ng lai r\u1ea5t s\u00e1ng s\u1ee7a. Ng\u00e0y nay nhi\u1ec1u v\u1ecb tr\u00ed \u0111i\u1ec1u h\u00e0nh y\u00eau c\u1ea7u tri th\u1ee9c v\u1ec1 CNTT cho n\u00ean th\u0103ng ti\u1ebfn ngh\u1ec1 nghi\u1ec7p c\u1ee7a nh\u1eefng ng\u01b0\u1eddi c\u00f3 b\u1eb1ng c\u1ea5p CNTT l\u00e0 t\u1ed1t h\u01a1n nh\u1eefng ng\u01b0\u1eddi kh\u00e1c. Khi c\u00f4ng ngh\u1ec7 ti\u1ebfp t\u1ee5c t\u1ea1o ra nhi\u1ec1u canh t\u00e2n h\u01a1n, t\u01b0\u01a1ng lai \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c mong \u0111\u1ee3i th\u1eadm ch\u00ed c\u00f2n l\u1edbn h\u01a1n ng\u00e0y nay.<\/p>\n

V\u1edbi to\u00e0n c\u1ea7u ho\u00e1, m\u1ecdi ng\u00e0nh c\u00f4ng nghi\u1ec7p \u0111\u1ec1u d\u1ef1a tr\u00ean CNTT \u0111\u1ec3 duy tr\u00ec t\u00ednh c\u1ea1nh tranh. M\u1ecdi ng\u01b0\u1eddi b\u00e1n l\u1ebb \u0111ang t\u1ef1 \u0111\u1ed9ng ho\u00e1 kinh doanh c\u1ee7a h\u1ecd; h\u1ecd c\u1ea7n CNTT \u0111\u1ec3 ki\u1ec3m so\u00e1t kho v\u00e0 b\u00e1n h\u00e0ng. Ng\u01b0\u1eddi qu\u1ea3n l\u00ed c\u1ea7n d\u1eef li\u1ec7u ch\u00ednh x\u00e1c cho \u0111\u1eb7t h\u00e0ng h\u00e0ng ho\u00e1 v\u00e0 qu\u1ea3n l\u00ed d\u00e2y chuy\u1ec1n cung c\u1ea5p c\u1ee7a h\u1ecd. C\u00f4ng ti ng\u00e2n h\u00e0ng v\u00e0 t\u00e0i ch\u00ednh c\u1ea7n CNTT \u0111\u1ec3 qu\u1ea3n l\u00ed m\u1ecdi t\u00e0i kho\u1ea3n v\u00e0 giao t\u00e1c c\u0169ng nh\u01b0 d\u1ef1 b\u00e1o xu h\u01b0\u1edbng v\u00e0 quy\u1ebft \u0111\u1ecbnh th\u01b0\u01a1ng m\u1ea1i. C\u00e1c c\u00f4ng ti vi\u1ec5n th\u00f4ng c\u1ea7n \u1ee9ng d\u1ee5ng CNTT cho \u0111i\u1ec7n tho\u1ea1i th\u00f4ng minh c\u1ee7a h\u1ecd \u0111\u1ec3 gi\u00fap ng\u01b0\u1eddi d\u00f9ng theo d\u00f5i tin t\u1ee9c, t\u00ecm v\u1ecb tr\u00ed, g\u1ee3i \u00fd kh\u00e1ch s\u1ea1n, hay ch\u01a1i tr\u00f2 ch\u01a1i. C\u00f3 nhi\u1ec1u \u1ee9ng d\u1ee5ng c\u1ee7a CNTT trong m\u1ecdi ng\u00e0nh c\u00f4ng nghi\u1ec7p. Ph\u00e1t tri\u1ec3n n\u00e0y d\u1eabn t\u1edbi ph\u00e1t tri\u1ec3n kh\u00e1c, t\u1ea1o ra nhu c\u1ea7u m\u1edbi v\u1ec1 nhi\u1ec1u ph\u1ea7n m\u1ec1m CNTT. Khi nhi\u1ec1u ng\u00e0nh c\u00f4ng nghi\u1ec7p th\u00fac \u0111\u1ea9y \u1ee9ng d\u1ee5ng CNTT c\u1ee7a h\u1ecd, nh\u1eefng ng\u00e0nh kh\u00e1c ph\u1ea3i \u0111i theo \u0111\u1ec3 c\u1ea3i ti\u1ebfn hi\u1ec7u qu\u1ea3 c\u1ee7a h\u1ecd v\u00e0 gi\u1ea3m chi ph\u00ed.<\/p>\n

Nhi\u1ec1u sinh vi\u00ean tin vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0m CNTT ph\u1ea7n l\u1edbn l\u00e0 l\u1eadp tr\u00ecnh v\u00e0 ki\u1ec3m th\u1eed. \u0110i\u1ec1u \u0111\u00f3 l\u00e0 KH\u00d4NG \u0111\u00fang. L\u1eadp tr\u00ecnh v\u00e0 ki\u1ec3m th\u1eed ch\u1ec9 l\u00e0 hai trong nhi\u1ec1u v\u1ecb tr\u00ed v\u00e0 c\u00f3 nhi\u1ec1u v\u1ecb tr\u00ed m\u1edbi h\u01a1n \u0111ang \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c t\u1ea1o ra m\u1ecdi ng\u00e0y. Khi nhi\u1ec1u h\u1ec7 th\u1ed1ng CNTT \u0111ang \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c t\u00edch h\u1ee3p, c\u00e1c ng\u00e0nh c\u00f4ng nghi\u1ec7p c\u1ea7n ki\u1ebfn tr\u00fac s\u01b0 h\u1ec7 th\u1ed1ng, ng\u01b0\u1eddi thi\u1ebft k\u1ebf ph\u1ea7n m\u1ec1m v\u00e0 chuy\u00ean gia t\u00edch h\u1ee3p. Nh\u1eefng v\u1ecb tr\u00ed n\u00e0y n\u1eb1m trong s\u1ed1 c\u00e1c vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0m “n\u00f3ng” ng\u00e0y nay. Khi nhi\u1ec1u h\u1ec7 th\u1ed1ng \u0111ang chuy\u1ec3n v\u00e0o m\u00e2y, qu\u1ea3n l\u00ed d\u1ecbch v\u1ee5 tr\u1edf th\u00e0nh vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0m “n\u00f3ng” kh\u00e1c v\u00ec ph\u1ea7n m\u1ec1m kh\u00f4ng ch\u1ec9 l\u00e0 s\u1ea3n ph\u1ea9m m\u00e0 c\u0169ng c\u00f2n l\u00e0 d\u1ecbch v\u1ee5. V\u1edbi Internet nhi\u1ec1u doanh nghi\u1ec7p \u0111ang tr\u1edf th\u00e0nh c\u1eeda h\u00e0ng tr\u1ef1c tuy\u1ebfn. Th\u1ebf gi\u1edbi \u1ea3o b\u00e2y gi\u1edd l\u00e0 th\u1ecb tr\u01b0\u1eddng l\u1edbn nh\u1ea5t v\u1edbi ti\u1ec1m n\u0103ng kh\u1ed5ng l\u1ed3. Do \u0111\u00f3, ng\u01b0\u1eddi thi\u1ebft k\u1ebf Web v\u00e0 vi\u1ec7c t\u1ed1i \u01b0u \u0111\u1ed9ng c\u01a1 T\u00ecm (SEO) \u0111ang tr\u1edf th\u00e0nh vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0m “n\u00f3ng”. Khi nhi\u1ec1u ng\u01b0\u1eddi \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c k\u1ebft n\u1ed1i qua m\u1ea1ng x\u00e3 h\u1ed9i; ph\u00e2n t\u00edch d\u1eef li\u1ec7u v\u00e0 k\u0129 ngh\u1ec7 x\u00e3 h\u1ed9i l\u00e0 nh\u1eefng vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0m kh\u00e1c c\u00f3 nhu c\u1ea7u cao. C\u00e0ng nhi\u1ec1u ng\u01b0\u1eddi l\u00e0m c\u00e1c th\u1ee9 tr\u1ef1c tuy\u1ebfn, h\u1ecd c\u00e0ng c\u1ea7n b\u1ea3o v\u1ec7 cho n\u00ean chuy\u00ean vi\u00ean an ninh m\u00e1y t\u00ednh l\u00e0 vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0m “n\u00f3ng” kh\u00e1c. V\u1ec1 c\u0103n b\u1ea3n, CNTT \u0111\u00e3 m\u1edf ra h\u00e0ng ngh\u00ecn v\u1ecb tr\u00ed m\u1edbi v\u00e0 c\u00e1c chuy\u00ean m\u00f4n m\u00e0 th\u1eadm ch\u00ed kh\u00f4ng t\u1ed3n t\u1ea1i v\u00e0i n\u0103m tr\u01b0\u1edbc \u0111\u00e2y v\u00e0 nhi\u1ec1u vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0m m\u1edbi \u0111ang s\u1eafp t\u1edbi.<\/p>\n

C\u00f3 k\u0129 n\u0103ng CNTT s\u1ebd cung c\u1ea5p cho b\u1ea1n n\u1ec1n t\u1ea3ng m\u1ea1nh v\u1ec1 tri th\u1ee9c, c\u00e1ch gi\u1ea3i quy\u1ebft v\u1ea5n \u0111\u1ec1 v\u00e0 t\u01b0 duy logic \u0111i\u1ec1u s\u1ebd cung c\u1ea5p \u01b0u th\u1ebf c\u1ea1nh tranh cho b\u1ea1n trong ngh\u1ec1 nghi\u1ec7p c\u1ee7a b\u1ea1n. Ng\u01b0\u1ee3c v\u1edbi nhi\u1ec1u th\u00f4ng tin sai r\u1eb1ng ng\u01b0\u1eddi CNTT th\u01b0\u1eddng l\u00e0m vi\u1ec7c m\u1ed9t m\u00ecnh tr\u01b0\u1edbc m\u00e1y t\u00ednh; ph\u1ea7n l\u1edbn c\u00f4ng vi\u1ec7c CNTT y\u00eau c\u1ea7u m\u1ed9t t\u1ed5 nhi\u1ec1u ng\u01b0\u1eddi v\u1edbi c\u00e1c lo\u1ea1i k\u0129 n\u0103ng kh\u00e1c nhau. \u0110\u1ec3 th\u00e0nh c\u00f4ng trong CNTT b\u1ea1n c\u1ea7n c\u1ea3 k\u0129 n\u0103ng k\u0129 thu\u1eadt v\u00e0 k\u0129 n\u0103ng m\u1ec1m. Ng\u00e0y nay ng\u01b0\u1eddi t\u1ed1t nghi\u1ec7p CNTT c\u00f3 nhi\u1ec1u ch\u1ecdn l\u1ef1a v\u00ec h\u1ecd c\u00f3 nhi\u1ec1u c\u00f4ng ti \u0111\u1ec3 ch\u1ecdn. Kh\u00f4ng l\u00e2u tr\u01b0\u1edbc \u0111\u00e2y, l\u00e0m vi\u1ec7c cho Microsoft hay Google \u0111\u00e3 l\u00e0 m\u01a1 \u01b0\u1edbc c\u1ee7a nhi\u1ec1u ng\u01b0\u1eddi nh\u01b0ng ng\u00e0y nay Facebook v\u00e0 Twitter l\u00e0 c\u00e1c l\u1ef1a ch\u1ecdn \u01b0a chu\u1ed9ng. B\u00ean c\u1ea1nh c\u00e1c c\u00f4ng ti ph\u1ea7n m\u1ec1m \u0111\u00e3 c\u00f3 uy t\u00edn \u0111\u1ec3 l\u00e0m vi\u1ec7c v\u1edbi, m\u1ed9t s\u1ed1 ng\u01b0\u1eddi mu\u1ed1n b\u1eaft \u0111\u1ea7u c\u00f4ng ti ri\u00eang c\u1ee7a h\u1ecd. Tu\u1ea7n tr\u01b0\u1edbc Facebook \u0111\u00e3 mua Instagram, m\u1ed9t c\u00f4ng ti m\u1edbi b\u1eaft \u0111\u1ea7u c\u00f2n nh\u1ecf v\u1edbi 10 nh\u00e2n vi\u00ean v\u1edbi gi\u00e1 1 t\u1ec9 \u0111\u00f4 la. \u0110i\u1ec1u \u0111\u00f3 d\u01b0\u1eddng nh\u01b0 gi\u1ed1ng nhi\u1ec1u ti\u1ec1n \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c chia cho m\u01b0\u1eddi ng\u01b0\u1eddi nh\u01b0ng \u0111i\u1ec1u n\u00e0y kh\u00f4ng ph\u1ea3i l\u00e0 b\u1ea5t b\u00ecnh th\u01b0\u1eddng. Advices to college students<\/p>\n

When students enroll in university, many are still not sure about what to study. Some asked me for advice and I often gave them the same answer that they should select Information Technology (IT) area such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Information System Management. Following are my reasons:<\/p>\n

We are living in the \u201cInformation Age\u201d where many things are based on Information Technology (IT). From the TV we watch to the phone we use; from businesses work to the way governments are operating, all are applying Information Technology. By taking advantage of this trend and developing the necessary skills, students can advance their career and be part of the global progress. Whether they want to be a scientist or develop the latest software. Whether they want to open their own business or work for a global company. Whether they want to work for government or building computer games, they all need to have IT skills.<\/p>\n

Some students believe that with an IT degree they can only work in the IT industry. It is NOT correct. With an IT degree, they can almost work for any industry. IT is a very broad field with a wide range of applications and job opportunities. IT drives innovation in sciences, business, manufacturing, agriculture, entertainment and education. Today IT jobs are among the highest paid and have the best job satisfaction among workers. With the critical shortage of IT workers all over the world, the chance of getting jobs is excellent. IT is a field with a very bright future. Today many executive positions require knowledge of IT so the career advancement of people with IT degree is better than others. As technology continues to create more innovations, the future is expected to be even greater than today.<\/p>\n

With globalization, just about every industry relies on IT to stay competitive. All retailers are automating their business; they need IT to control their inventory and sales. Managers need accurate data for ordering merchandises and manage their supply chain. Banking and financing company needs IT to manage all accounts and transactions as well as predict trends and trading decisions. Telecommunication companies need IT applications for their smart phones to help users watch news, find locations, suggest restaurants, or to play games. There are so many applications of IT in every industry. One development leads to another, creating new needs for more IT software. As more industries advance their IT applications, others must follow to improve their efficiency and reduce costs.<\/p>\n

Many students believe IT jobs are mostly programming and testing. It is NOT correct. Programming and testing are only two among many and there are more new positions being created every day. As more IT systems are being integrated, industries need system architects, software designers and integration specialists. These are among the \u201cHot\u201d jobs today. As more systems are moving into the cloud, service management becomes another \u201cHot\u201d job as software is not only a product but also services. With the Internet many business are becoming online stores. The virtual world is now the biggest market with enormous potential. Therefore, Web designers and Search engine optimization (SEO) are becoming \u201cHot\u201d jobs. As more people are connected via social network; data analysis and social engineering are other jobs that have high demand. The more people doing things on line, the more they need protection so computer security specialist is another \u201cHot\u201d job. Basically, IT has open up thousands of new positions and specialties that do not even exist few years ago and more new jobs coming soon.<\/p>\n

Having IT skills will provide you with a strong foundation of knowledge, problem solving and logical thinking that will serve as a competitive advantage to you in your career. Contradict to many misinformations that IT people often work alone in front of a computer; most IT works require a team of people with different kinds of skills. To succeed in IT you do need both technical skills and soft-skills. Today IT graduates have many choices as they have many companies to choose from. Not long ago, working for Microsoft or Google was a dream of many but today Facebook and Twitter are the preferable choices. Beside established software companies to work for, some want to start their own company. History of IT industry is full of people who start their own company successfully like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, or Sergey Brin who all are billionaires. However, there are hundred thousand IT millionaires that you probably never hear of their names.<\/p>\n

Last week Facebook brought Instagram, a small startup company with 10 employees for one billion dollars. It seems like a lot of money divided to ten people but this is not unusual. For the past few years, Google, Microsoft, Apple, Cisco, and other major tech companies have all spent hundreds of billions to buy up small startups, popular apps, IT services, or even Websites. It made many IT graduates become millionaires and billionaires when they are still in their early 20s or 30s. For example, Siri was a mobile app for the iPhone but due to its popular among users and a lot of downloads; it got the attention of Steve Jobs. Apple brought Siri for approx. $200 million dollars and makes few people who created this mobile app very rich. Three students created the videogame \u201cDraw something\u201d over few weeks, it was so popular that Zynga brought the software for $210 million. Skype was a small company with approx. 50 people creating software that allows people to talk over the internet instead of the telephone. Microsoft brought Skype for $8.5 billion dollars.<\/p>\n

With globalization, there are more IT jobs than qualified people to fill them. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that IT has the greatest potential for new jobs through 2025. If you want a stable career with high salary, consider study IT. If you also have good English language skills, you can expand your career to work internationally. The U.S has more than half million foreign workers and Europe has more than a million. Why not join these IT workers and travel the world? Every Christmas, I receive many greeting cards from former students who work in foreign countries; many come from places that I never heard of.<\/p>\n

I believe IT is a very good choice for college students. However, there are few things that I want to emphasize: There is a high turn-over among IT workers in every country. Many graduates work for one company for a short time than switch to another company for better salary. It looks like a logical move to get good offer but do not let this \u201ctrick\u201d you because most of these \u201cjumpy workers\u201d do not last long. After a few switches, a majority of them were fired and end their career. Many are lured by the \u201cblind ambition\u201d to get more money but do not focus on maintaining a deep practical skills. Many are knocked off balance by the changing market force due to their hasty decisions. The fact is new graduates may have theoretical knowledge but do not have the skills and experience yet. They need to develop the skills by apply what they know into real work. Technical skills take time to build and to master. There is a concern about foreign language required in the IT industry. Some students asked me: \u201cI do not plan to work oversea or go to another foreign country, why do I need to study English?\u201d Today with globalization, many IT projects are global distributed with team members come from many places. It is essential to know at least one foreign language, preferable English. In the IT industry, communication skills are vital. Many global companies will not hire you if you do not have foreign language skills. Even you work for a local company but your customers may come from a foreign country. How can you talk to customers or users if you do not speak their language?<\/p>\n

There is another concern about continuous learning or lifelong learning. Some students asked me: \u201cWhy do I have to learn new things? All I want is a degree and a job; I do not want to study all the time.\u201d My answer is unfortunately, the concept of having a degree than retire is obsolete. Today continuing education is vital because your competition will get stiffer. Technology changes and market also changes. You must be prepared to respond quickly to these changing conditions by learning new skills. You must continue to broaden your knowledge because if you do not, somebody will take your place. I often give students a simple motto: “Somewhere out there, someone is learning, and if you are not, he will take your jobs sooner or later.” I asked these students: \u201cYou want the best job and the highest paid position. You want to have a lot of money but do not want to put in any effort, either you are naive or you are dreaming.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the strong global economy and a huge need for IT skilled workers, now is a great time to be enrolled in IT career. If you like mathematics, Computer Science is a good choice. If you like engineering and solving problem, Software Engineering is a good choice. If you like business and management, Information System management is a good choice. As you make decision on your career, remember to discuss your choice with the school counselor to make sure you get what you want.<\/p>\n

Your generation is a new group of students that have full access to all the new technologies. With the internet and so many online trainings, webs, blogs and Wikipedia, you have all the advantages to learn that the previous generation did not have. Selecting a field to study is the first step; putting in your effort to learn is another step; the degree is the key that unlock the door of opportunities to you is a major step but more than that, you need to apply what you learned on the job to do your best and become an IT professional.
