When Facebook brought Instagram, a tiny company of 12 people for $1 billion, many were surprised. Instagram, which makes a mobile application to turn mobile-phone photos into works of art, is a small company of mostly young people just graduated few years ago.<\/p>\n

The founders, Kevin Systrom graduated in 2006 and Mike Krieger graduated in 2008. Both declined to be interviewed. After started the company, Kevin seek advice from Jack Dorsey, the founder of Twitter and the two became friends. Jack eventually invested in the start-up for a small percentage of ownership. He also convinced some of his friends to invest in this small company. Of course, their investments already worth a lot after Facebook brought the company. Most workers of Instagram are recent graduates who believe that mobile apps can be the \u201cbig thing\u201d. One person said: \u201cWe know that there are many people developing mobile apps but the difference is the idea. Most photographers do not consider phone camera is good as they have to buy expensive cameras worth thousand dollars to take beautiful pictures. We believe phone camera can do that too so we focus on our software to make phone pictures become beautiful arts. We make it easier for people to use it, modify it so they can go to Twitter, Facebook to share with their friends.\u201d Another person added: \u201cFew years ago, nobody would predict that mobile apps could be a big thing. Few months ago, nobody would predict that tablets and smart phones can replace laptops and desktops. We understand the trend and want to be the first on the market and that is why we have millions of people to use our product and it got the attention of Mark Zuckerberg.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked about million dollars to be distributed among 12 people in the company, most of them said they were in shock but at this time they are focusing on how to make their product better; easier to use than thinking about the money. Like the two founders, most workers did not want to be treated differently. They said that they are just a group of software developers who love to code and play video games just like any college students. When ask them about what would be their next thing to do. One person said: \u201cTo start another company\u201d.<\/p>\n

My guess is currently the technology market has switched from personal computer (PC) platform to mobile platform. Facebook is well positioned in PC platform but not mobile platform while Instagram have the most popular apps on mobile platforms. (Both iPhone and Android). To continue its success, Facebook must move quickly to mobile platform and occupy a strong position before somebody move in.<\/p>\n

Thirty years ago, the PC market was dominated by Microsoft. Twelve years ago, the Internet was dominated by Google. Five years ago, Facebook changed that by created the social network that connects three billion people on earth together. All three companies were based their technologies on PC platform.<\/p>\n

Two years ago, Steve Jobs changed that with the iPhone and mobile platform began to grow quickly. Google realized this and immediately created Android. With billion of smart phones in the world today, I think just a matter of time, PC platform will be replaced by mobile platform. Most people will use smart phones to connect to the internet. Facebook cannot afford for a new company to build another \u201cSocial mobile network\u201d on mobile platform so it has to move quickly to buy successful companies based on mobile platform. That could be the reason why it acquires Instagram. To some people, one billion is a lot for a small company of 12 people but from the position of Facebook, a company value at $120 billion, it is reasonable to get into the mobile market fast and dominate it immediately.<\/p>\n

Technology changes fast. Success always goes to people or company that understands the technology trend. Companies that do not adapt quickly to new technology will be eliminated.
