Teachers and students<\/p>\n

Every college has certain learning standards and goals for their students. Some maybe higher than others but standards and goals do not guarantee students\u2019 success. It is the students\u2019 motivation to learn, the efforts they put into the classes, the determination to be the best that distinguishes successful students from the not so successful.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, today many students go to college without such motivation. They are not prepared for college, they do not put in the best efforts; many skip classes; some come in late, fail to read the assigned materials; they do not consider classroom learning as important, some send text message during lectures, some listen music on their iPods. Such behaviors are often caused by the immature nature of students and the lack of direction for their careers. These behaviors, if not corrected will not only hurt students\u2019 learning, but also impact their future profession. If they are careless in their work today, they may be careless in their future jobs. If they cheat in class today, they will likely be cheating in their job tomorrow.<\/p>\n

Professors often assume that students go to college with the goal to learn and be successful. The reality is many students enter college lacking the discipline to be successful. Some consider college is only a requirement that they spend time there in exchange for a \u201cdegree\u201d afterward. Instead of pursuing knowledge, they chase after a \u201cdegree\u201d. That is why there are many graduates with degree but without jobs. This is a difficult problem to solve especially in today environment where there are so many distractions. As educator, we must find ways to help students change these negative attitudes and make college learning positive experiences.
\nTo start, students must be aware of their behavior. They must learn that behavior involve habits which influence their actions. A habit is a repeat of certain behaviors over time. Good behavior creates good habit and bad behavior creates bad habit. A bad habit can be changed by repeat good behavior over a period of time. For example, a student who is lazy can change his habit by setting time to study everyday and continue to do that over a period of 30 days than he can change his bad habit. By giving students explicit instructions about certain behaviors and how to change will bring out awareness among students. When they aware of their behavior, they can change.<\/p>\n

On the first day of class, professor should explain their expectations on classroom behaviors to students. For example, I request students to turn-off their mobile phone as it disrupts the class. I also ask students not to text message, use chat room, send email during the class by NOT open their laptops during lecture or class discussion. Students must know that positive behaviors, such as diligence, integrity, responsibility, and determination can influence their behaviors in classroom and impact their level of achievement.<\/p>\n

Today there are many distractions and most students cannot keep their attention for long. The traditional teaching method of lecturing is no longer effective. Professors must organize not only their class instructions but also the materials that help students to pay more attention and motivate to work hard beyond expectations. Class discussions, team debates, and student\u2019s presentations should be integrated with existing course content to support students’ learning. More importantly, professors must help students reflect on their commitment to learn. This is a necessary part of student development as they are maturing into adulthood. As such, responsibility and ethics development should become an integral part of their college learning.<\/p>\n

Traditional ways to measure student performance is common in all universities. Professors use tests, quizzes, projects and homeworks to measure the level students\u2019 learning. However, measuring motivation behavior is more challenging because it is influenced by the social context in which student lives. One technique that I often used is a combination of students’ self-assessment and formal assessment. I ask students to give themselves a grade that they expect from test, homework, and quiz then compare with the actual grade that they get from me. This allows students and me to discuss and reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of their learning as well as dispositions that impair students’ learning and pursuits beyond the classroom. For example, a student who set an expectation to get 10\/10 points from a test will study hard to get it. If he did not get what he expected, he will learn why and make efforts to correct that. A student who set expectation to only get 5\/10 will have to tell me why he would set such a low score. The discussion may lead to a corrective action to help student to go beyond the classroom and get into motivation and learning activities.<\/p>\n

Every student is interested in their career achievement. By making it explicit to their development will enhance their learning. By connect learning to career goals and future aspect will make learning more real, more practical that can translate into knowledge and skills. Professors should clearly explain each subject taught in class to practical skills that they will need in their career. For example, by explain that requirements engineering course is about developing critical skills in understand customer\u2019s needs and how bad requirements can turn a software project into a chaotic disaster. Students need to understand \u201cWHY\u201d they need to learn something BEFORE they learn it. Traditional courses often start with the \u201cWHAT\u201d and \u201cHOW\u201d but rarely \u201cWHY\u201d so we need to change it. Knowing the \u201cWHY\u201d will help motivate students and students who value their learning will more likely reach an optimal level of being the best. They will also become more cognizant of their own development and career.<\/p>\n

Four years of college is short but it is a critical time for us, the educators, to shape their minds. When they graduate, we can see their growth and accomplishments. Most students are in our lives for a short period of time but it is us, the educators to make a difference in their lives.<\/p>\n

If we look back in our own lives, we may remember all teachers who had influence on us. Even after fifty years, I can still remember their faces, and things that they said to me when I was in school. I never forget teachers who had influence on my career, teachers who encourage me as well as teachers who challenge me to reach my potential. There was a teacher who believes that I could be a scientist. I never imagine that I could be good enough if it was not for his encouragement. I never think about it, if he had not suggested the idea that I should continue my education. There was another professor who told me: “You are a good engineer but I think you better be a college professor, have you ever consider teaching?\u201d At the time, I did not even imagine that I can be a professor and did not believe him.<\/p>\n

How many of us remember students? How many students do we encounter over our career? And how soon after the course ends have they faded from our conscious? Few years ago I went to India to visit a large software company; a senior manager asked me: “You don’t remember me, do you?” I was surprised but did not remember anything. He said: \u201cI am your student and I took your software engineering class in 1997.” The same thing happened in China, Japan, S. Korea, England, and Turkey when I went there. There were so many students who remember their professors and they all told me that I had helped them in their careers. Some told me that I made a difference in their lives. Of course, I did not remember much. Each year, during Christmas I received many greeting cards from former students with many names that I did not remember but they remember me.<\/p>\n

We cannot make a difference in every student’s life, and we probably will not remember most of them. But we should be prepared and ready to put our efforts in helping them to reach their full potential, willing to guide them in their pursuit of their careers, and believe that we can make a difference in their lives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
