Giving order<\/p>\n

A manager wrote to me after reading my blog about managing technical people: \u201cI do not agree with you about not giving order to my workers. I think good management should give order. Have you ever been in the military? Imagine what will happen when there is no order? Please comment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: Giving orders is telling people to do something such as \u201cdo this or do that\u201d. How do you feel when someone orders you to do something? Do you want to receive order? When you order your workers to do something, you are not giving them the opportunity to think about what to do or how to do it. They are just doing exactly as you tell them. Therefore you are not allowing the worker to analyze or give them the opportunity to learn.<\/p>\n

There are times when giving orders is appropriate such as in the military. The leader must give order to the soldiers when they need to \u201cmove forward\u201d, or \u201cattack\u201d. These soldiers are trained to follow orders and it is important for them to do it without stop and analyzing it. However the industry is not the military and knowledge workers are not soldiers. Instead of giving orders, manager should give instructions. Giving instructions is not telling them what to do, but what you want to get done. Because you allow your workers to think and analyze the situation about what would be the best way to do it rather than do something without thinking, you encourage them and believe in them.<\/p>\n

Today most technical workers are well trained. They are trained to think when they are given an instruction. They are trained to analyze and determine which will be the best method. When you allow them to analyze the situation, it encourages them to do it in the best way possible to get the job done. By allow them to do it according to what they see fit; it encourages their confidence in what they do. Giving instructions and encourage are better way to manage than giving order.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
