C\u00f4ng ngh\u1ec7 th\u00f4ng tin (CNTT) l\u00e0 m\u1ed9t trong nh\u1eefng c\u00f4ng nghi\u1ec7p t\u0103ng tr\u01b0\u1edfng nhanh nh\u1ea5t trong 20 n\u0103m qua v\u00e0 \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c mong \u0111\u1ee3i t\u0103ng t\u1ed1c trong m\u01b0\u1eddi n\u0103m t\u1edbi. Industry and university relationship<\/p>\n

Information Technology (IT) is one of the fastest growing industries in the past 20 years and is expected to accelerate in the next ten years. Currently the world is experience a critical shortage of IT skilled workers and to meet such large demand, every country is focusing on developing more IT workers.<\/p>\n

However, IT is a fast changing industry and often needs workers with the latest skills so it is difficult for university to update their trainings fast enough to meet demand. The biggest challenge for the IT industry is to find the right skilled workers to meet the needs. The biggest challenge for universities is to have the best training programs to develop skilled graduates to meet industry demand. A recent global report found that in most countries, only 20% to 45% of IT graduates are employable, which means there are many graduates who do not have the skills or capabilities to get jobs in the IT industry. Even in country where IT has been successful such as India, over 70% of its IT graduates could not get jobs due to their poorly trained education systems. An Indian government official lamented: \u201cIf all of our graduates are qualified, we probably can take over all of the IT jobs in the world and create hundred million jobs for India.\u201d Current reports also found that despite the high demand, numbers of student enrollment in IT in some countries are low due to restrictive admission of their education systems. Instead of encourage more students to pursue career in IT, many schools are limited the number of students enrollment based on their lack of space and faculty. An official explained: \u201cThere is no priority scheme in the way schools are organized their offerings as they want to keep a balance in all fields of study. Instead of set higher priority to allow more students to enroll in IT and less students in other fields, they set admission quota for each field.\u201d\u00a0 Furthermore, professors are reluctant to make the necessary changes in the trainings due to their lack of experiences in new technologies and schools do not have enough resources to hire qualified and knowledgeable faculty. The question remains about what could be done to improve the skill of graduates?<\/p>\n

The education system needs an environment that fosters active partnerships between industry and universities. In most developed countries, technology work is given high priority among private universities. By focus more on technology and research, these schools attracts more students and top faculty as well as supports from the industry. There is a different between private and state universities. State universities receive funding from government on an annual basis so regardless what they do; the funding is still the same so there is no urgent need to change anything. On the contrary, private universities do not receive funding from government, they operate based on students\u2019 tuitions and supports from the industry so they must frequently update their trainings and research to meet market demand and change quickly. Most of top universities in the U.S are private universities. These schools receive large funding from the industry for their research and high quality education. Top schools like Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Carnegie Mellon etc. received large amount in term of billion dollars from private companies. Innovation and research support newer and better curricula, sometime ahead of industry demand so these schools not only develop students with newer and highly skills, but also help them become entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n

I believe universities should upgrade the training programs to be more attuned with industry needs. By focusing more on technology and specific hot domains today like mobile, software, electronics, biotechnology etc. they can link their curricula content to the industry needs and successfully develop industry-ready professionals.<\/p>\n

To meet the industry needs, some schools are beginning to offer second degree option to non-technology graduates by allowing them to spend additional two years to earn a second degree in technology so they can work in the IT industry and help solve the skilled shortage issue. This has been a successful program in the U.S to solve the unemployed among graduates who study non-technology areas such as business, humanities and arts. This could be replicated somewhere also to get enough skilled workers for the industry via skill enhancement courses on focused areas such as mobile, healthcare, and software technology. An industry report states that 82% of these students (Dual degree program) are eligible for job in the IT sector after 18 months of training.<\/p>\n

The demand for a global IT workforce is expected to grow several times over the next few years. The current employability rate among engineering graduates is not so impressive in every country. Universities should relook at these trainings and upgrade their programs to be attuned with industry needs. For innovation and technology to flourish, industry-academia interaction needs to be strengthened.
