To pursue a Master’s Degree<\/p>\n

A software developer wrote to me with a question: \u201cI have a Bachelor\u2019s degree in Computer Science and have been working as a software developer for six years. I want to go back to school to improve my skills. Should I study Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Master\u2019s in Computer Science? Please advice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: It depends on what you want to do with your career. You must decide your career direction on what do you want to do first then decide which Master\u2019s degree that can help you to achieve your career goals. For example, if you want to get into the management position, an MBA is a better choice because it teaches you about business, financing, budgeting, accounting, marketing, and other management skills. If you want to continue on a technical career, you should find a Master\u2019s degree program that expands your technical knowledge in a specialized area that you like. For example: Computer security, database design, system architect, robotics, or any specific technical area. Since you already have a degree in computer science, you must find the school that has a specific technical Master\u2019s program not a general master\u2019s in computer science since it is not designed for someone like you.<\/p>\n

It is important for technical people to understand that if you select a technical career path, you should specialize in a technical area. Becoming a technical specialist in a high demand technology can give you significant advantage in the job market and command much higher pay for your specialized skills. Today a technical specialist in an area of high demand, such as database administration, enterprise system architecture, and computer security can find a job much easier than a generalist with a master degree. My advice is to find a school that has a specialized Master\u2019s degree not a general Master degree.<\/p>\n

If you want to get an MBA, since your bachelor degree is not in business you will be a generalist business manager with a broad knowledge on many things. In that case, an MBA may not necessarily help you much. Of course it gives you some advantages in getting into management in your own company. Since you are a technical person with experiences and now you have an MBA, you could start a new career as a technical manager. However, if you are looking for a new job, you will have to compete against a lot of people with management experience that have been laid-off during the financial crisis. You need to understand that you do not automatically get a management job just because you have an MBA.<\/p>\n

Regardless what direction and goal that you set for yourself, you are responsible for your own career. Remember that a degree is only a key to open the door of opportunity but you must enter it by continued to improve your skills. The more responsibility you take, the more you can advance. Some people often blame someone for their problems, if they do not get what they want, it is always someone\u2018s fault. If you do not take full responsibility for your career than you have to wait for someone to do something for you; which means you have given up control over your own life for some outside forces and in this case you will be a person waiting and waiting forever.<\/p>\n

My advice: First, take personal responsibility for your career success because only you can make it happens by willing to do the things necessary to succeed. Second, set career goals and then do whatever it takes to achieve them. Third, many things will happen as you go through life, you will encounter many problems and obstacles. You need to react positively to the negative things and move forward toward your goals and career success. Things will come and go but it is your determination and your responsibility will stay with you throughout your life.<\/p>\n
