Student and the job market<\/p>\n

A student wrote to me: \u201cI want to know what I could do with a degree in computer science? I am confused about the current job market. Some people say that there is a shortage of computer workers but others say that there are many computer graduates with no job. Please advice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: Even with the shortage of computer skilled workers and competition for information technology graduates among companies, there is a difference between top schools with the best training programs and a \u201cNot so well known\u201d schools with poor training programs. That is why some graduates have no problem of finding work when others are struggling in their job search. Today companies do NOT hire graduates based on the degree BUT on skills. Companies always seek applicants with good grades from well-known schools, they review applications to select ones that have the skills that they need and also look for summer internships as working experience.<\/p>\n

It is important to note that NOT all degrees are equal and NOT all training programs are the same. Companies do ask applicants on the latest courses that they have as technology field is changing constantly and companies want to find students with the most up to date training programs. Technical graduates often take a lot of technical courses but do not take additional courses in business or foreign languages and that could be weaknesses. Last year, a manager told me: \u201cThere are thousand graduates who can code and test that I could hire but I select few with additional skills in business as evidence in their school record. These are people who have balance in their learning as they can do more than just technical work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today computing field is expanding into many directions with many specializations. It is important to know which is needed and which is no longer needed. Students must catch the trend when it is in the up-swing, not when it goes down. For example, few years ago web development is hot but today the hot jobs are mobile applications, cloud computing and big data. If students follow the trend and get the right skills when they graduate, they can get good jobs, on the contrary if they do not and miss the trend, than they may not get what they want.\u00a0According to a recent global report, the world will need 35 million information technology workers by 2020. A recent newspaper study finds a shortage of 580,000 unfilled positions in the U.S alone (2012 data). The report states that currently Google has over 4,000 unfilled openings, Microsoft has 3,000, and Facebook needs 5,000 workers. A similar number also exists in Europe and Asia as companies are looking for computing skilled workers. New jobs are opening up that nobody even heard of few years ago. Jobs with titles like Cloud computing, Service manager, Big data analyst, Data scientist, Mobile apps developers, Tablets developers, and Data mining specialist etc. However, if you look careful at these jobs, you can see that many of them can be filled by retrained IT workers. For example it is easy for a web developer to learn about mobile apps development, tablets development. However, some people do not like to go back to school to learn new skills. A common complaint is: \u201cI have a degree already, why do I need to go back and learn something?\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, every industry relies on information technology to improve its business. As technology changes, there is always a need to upgrade the systems. However, as new hardware products are becoming faster and cheaper, the critical need is on software applications to run those systems. Basically most software engineering graduates not only have their selection of jobs, they have multiple companies to choose from. Beside established companies, there is new trend of start-ups as some graduates want to create their own company rather than work for somebody else.<\/p>\n

The job market for information technology graduates is really hot today, but companies are not just hiring based on degree, they demand skills and a commitment to ongoing career development. Students must keep their skills up to date by adopting a lifelong learning attitude as competition will get stiffer. They must be prepared to respond quickly to changing market conditions by willing to learn new skills.
