The Information Age<\/p>\n

There is a positive sign of economic recovery due to the advancing in Information Technology. Three top IT companies: IBM, Intel and Google recently reported surprisingly robust profits. Apple shocks every investor by having the best revenues of several billion dollars higher than expected. Wall Street analysts reported that venture capital investments in the U.S are growing strong again. And Microsoft announced that they will release \u201cWindows 8\u201d operating system which is expected to drive more demand for personal computers and smart phones. The outlook for IT companies in other countries is also bright. The signs of a recovery also happen in some Asia countries early in the year. South Korea and Taiwan both announced that they are increasing production in computer chips and electronic devices and hiring more workers.<\/p>\n

These are clear evidences that the IT industry is driving economy growth. Some analysts even predict that IT not just pull the economy out of recession but also boost productivity and create more jobs in the next five years. A Wall street analyst recommends: \u201cWith new technologies devices such as smart phones and tablets, the entire IT industry will continue transforming the business market. As hardware devices act as pioneers in economic growth, the next step would be software as these devices will need software to run. This is where investments in mobile app companies and software companies will thrive and I recommend investors to start investing in the software area.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is estimated that smart phone will increase from one billion to three billion users in the next three years, the market for mobile apps will explode and need more people to write mobile apps. The fastest job growth will be in software developers for mobile apps. However, as IT industry is driving economic growth and create more jobs, countries without a strong IT industry or countries whose economy are still depending on manufacturing industry will not be able to recover. Wall Street business analysts believe that the economic downturn will continue in those countries with high unemployment as they cannot rebound from the crisis. An analyst comments: \u201cIndia with a strong IT industry did not experience economic downturn but China who did not have strong IT industry but relied mostly on manufacturing have been suffering a great deal. No matter how much money Chinese government put in to stimulate the economy, it will not help because the driver for growth is not there. We recommend our investors to switch their investments to market that can grow faster.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today consumers are buying products like iPhone, Androids, iPads, and Tablets and these in turn have driven the demand for more products and software. There are good reasons to be excited as the demand for mobile software application is expected to increase 400% in the next five years. The excellent results at Apple, Google and Intel reflect increased demand from consumers. Apple has benefited from its iPhone and iPads, Google from users clicking on more advertisements and Intel from many devices which contain its chips. As more companies are upgrading their IT systems, the biggest amount of technology spending is on providing software as a services and cloud computing. IBM, which offers the entire range of IT services, from powerful computers to consulting services, is the key for the overall health of the IT industry. Indian outsourcing industry has announced that they have surpassed the $100 billion dollars export this year and created additional two million new jobs. Their next goal is to reach $200 Billion and ten million new jobs by 2020. An Indian government officer declared: \u201cWe are confident that we will reach that $200 billion dollars goal, the only risk is whether we can train enough million software workers for the next five years to make it happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is obvious that the technology industry can lead the world economy out of the recession. However, it only works in countries with strong IT industry and has enough IT workers to prosper in this changing time. Countries that are still supported by cheap labors and stimulus programs may not be that lucky as the rule has changed. It will just take some time for them to recognize that in the information age, things can change fast, at the speed of the internet. Perhaps the current global recession is the beginning, a warning sign that the transition from the industrial age to the information age has come to a close as we are fully in the information age now.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
