A person wrote to me: \u201cI did not graduate in Information Technology (IT) but in other field. I have a job, it is not exciting and does not pay much. Many people told me that I am lucky to have a job. However I feel bad that I did not select something exciting like IT when I was in school. Now it is too late since I already have a family and a young child. I cannot go back to school to learn new skills. I do not know what to do and I feel depressed since I do not see that I can succeed in my career. Please advice.”<\/p>\n

Answer: You did not tell me what field of study that you selected and what job you are working on. However, you have made a decision early on your career. It is not about right or wrong and this is not the time to look back and feel bitter. Please do not make the situation worst. You are responsible for your own career and now you have another responsibility for your own family. There is no bad career only bad attitude so do not fell into this trap. If you want to succeed in your career, you can make it happen.<\/p>\n

To succeed in anything you must take time to learn more about your industry. Read industry magazines, news, and blogs and attend conferences to learn more so you can have better knowledge about the state of your industry. The more you know, the more people will respect you and that is the first step for you build your professional career. Knowing where your industry is going will help you decide what other areas of knowledge are important for you to focus on. As a professional, you should not passively wait for the manager to tell you what to do. You must be pro-active to figure out solutions on your own. When you find your own solutions, you develop confidence and strengthen your skills. Set yourself a goal and work toward it. When you achieve it, set another goal and work toward it. As you continue making progress, others will recognize you and good things can happen. Goal-setting is the essential thing to keep you motivated about your career, regardless what it is, especially if your current job is not exciting. When you have something important to work on, it will keep you focused on improving and moving forward.<\/p>\n

When you go to work, you have to work with people like you. Some may be happy, some may not but you must learn to get along with these people. Show your enthusiast for the work; keep a positive attitude on what you do. You never know when you will need them to support you and you never know what will happen later in your career. Improve your technical skills and work on developing your communication skills. You will not be respected at any places unless you can clearly communicate with people from all levels. Observe experienced people in your company to learn from them and learn to listen. When you listen to the others, you can ask them more engaging questions and in turn, create better conversations. Eventually you will get their attention. Spending time with those who inspire you, people who make you comfortable and give you advice.\u00a0 To improve your career, relationships are important because that is where your opportunities will come from. In most companies, it really is about who you know. When you take the time to develop positive relationships with customers, managers, co-workers etc., you will find that they may present you with opportunities that you may not even think about. A great way to improve your career is to seek out a mentor from someone who is successful.
