First year students<\/p>\n

Many students go to college but have no idea what to study or what career to pursue. There is a common belief among first year students that they do not have to make a choice on the field of study until they find what they like. What will happen when they do not find what they like until second or third year? In that case it may take them longer to graduate and waste time and money or may miss a good opportunity. I suggest that college students to start exploring different areas of study as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

If you do not know what to study, you should make a list of high school subjects that interested you most. You may start the top of the list with subjects that you do well then go down to any possible subject that you like. From this list, you can try to match each with the field of study offered in your college. For example, if literature is first on your list, check out the offerings of your college\u2019s literature department then ask yourself what you can do with a degree in literature. Talk to school counselors about career prospective of similar areas such as technical writing, scientific communication, or linguistics. You may find a field of study that you like.<\/p>\n

If you are not sure about what subjects interest you, you can pick up information about each field of study that is offered in your college. The school often lists all required classes for each field. Investigate these classes to see how many of them are interested to you. If you think you have found a potential field of study then go talk with your school advisor as well as students who are studying in that field to get some feedback or advices. The best information is from students who are in their third or fourth year as they can provide some valuable insight information to you.<\/p>\n

Before making any decision, make sure that you talk to your parents for their opinion. You should also do some research on required courses that you want to take and look carefully at those areas that you are interested in. You may make decision on a field after carefully consider all factors that you found. Remember that it is acceptable to change your mind later. Once you have selected a field of study it does not mean you have to stay with it. If you find that later that the field that you selected is not for you, go back to the first step to find something else. Once you have decided on a new field of study, talk to you parents and other students for advices then meet with your school advisor so they can help you make the change.<\/p>\n

Regardless what field you choose, there are two things that you will need to improve your career: A foreign language and knowledge of information technology. According to a new college study, 86% of job in the next ten years will require these two skills. Globalization requires workers to communicate well regardless where you work and information age requires future workers to have computer skills upon entering the workforce. More than 50 percent of job today is seeking workers who can speak a foreign language and have some technology skills but by 2020, it is predicted that 80% of jobs will require these skills. The study state that students who have these skills would have better opportunities in finding work as many companies today want employees with a broad knowledge base that can be applied across the business, but also a deep understanding of their specific field. Such demands require universities to offer language and computer courses for all students, regardless of their field of study. Studying foreign language and technology is the right approach; it helps students understand how technology is applied to various businesses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
