Fifty years ago, life was simple. You went to college, selected a field of study, graduated, got a job in that field, and stayed in that job for life. Today, if you do the same, you may last about few years and if you do not learn new skills, you may become one of those unemployed workers. If you take a technical course in college, about half of what you learn in the first year is obsolete by the time you graduate. So it is NOT how much you memorize but how do you think and APPLY it to solve problems that will help you to get a job. When you have a job, you will need to continue to learn new things throughout your life to stay employable. The old way of memorize things to pass exams is no longer valid but the ability to apply it to do something is more important. This requires a new attitude in learning and understanding. Few years ago company selected workers based on college degrees, today most companies select workers via a series of skills test.<\/p>\n

Fifty years ago, life was different. A man came home from work and spent time with his family. The family structure was clear: The husband works, the wife stayed home and took care of children. They may have a radio or a black and white TV with few channels. Today life is more complicated with many distractions. Few families can survive with one person working. Both husband and wife must work and when they come home they have many choices. They may have their own computer with access to the Internet so they can check emails, chat with friends, or search for information that they like. They may spend more time on the Internet or play video games rather be with each other. They may have Flat Screen 3 D color TV with thousands of channels to watch that keep them more busy. Few families cook but buy ready-to-eat foods from stores. Some families have more than one TV so each member can watch their favorite channels on their own TV. If they have children, they may have videogames to play which keep them busy and not disturb their parents. Family therefore do not talk much with each others as each member is too busy with their own interest and these things often lead to serious issues. Today, few people talk face to face to each others. They use mobile phone, emails or text messages. Parents have no idea what their children are doing in the virtual world. Are they access good websites or bad websites? Some think if their children use computers, they must be learning about technology. Not many people understand the impact both good and bad of technology. Many young people become addicted to clever advertising of new merchandises. They must have the newest, the latest electronic devices and become mindless slaves to these companies. Few people spend adequate time for thinking, having moments for reflection, understanding, reading a good book from beginning to end. Sometime I wonder how many people are still reading book? The fact is today there are many good books, good websites to learn that many students ignore but they are attracted to bad books, bad websites that promote violent, sex, and consumerism.<\/p>\n

If you tell me that information technology (IT) does not change things then you must be dreaming. Imagine how much IT has changed the business and the way people work today. There is a challenge to all of us, when thinking of our careers or our lives. We need to understand how IT impacts us to forge a life that we actually want. It does not mean we reject technology but we need to use technology wisely to our advantages. It means establishing a set of principles, guidelines, and rules so that we have a meaningful life with technology serving us NOT that we serve technology. Many people believe that it is impossible because things happen to them as they cannot control the impact of technology in their life. A student told me that he cannot live without the internet so I asked him to turn off the computer for one day to see if he would die. Another student told me that he cannot stop watching TV as excuse for not spend enough time to study so I recommended to him that he should spend the entire day in the library to study instead of stay home in front of the TV.<\/p>\n
