A student wrote: \u201cI will graduate next month in business management but I could not find a job yet. I have applied in many companies and had few interviews but no offer. I am worry and I do not know what to do? Should I go back to school and study Information System Management?”<\/p>\n

Answer: If you have spent a lot of efforts looking for job but have not found anything yet, maybe you need to look at the way you apply for job. Many graduates randomly send out resumes for any job that seem good even they are not qualified. Do NOT waste time by doing this. Focus your search on job that you can do based on your field of study. This involves some serious evaluation to determine for what type of work you are qualified. Do NOT send out one resume for all the job openings. Depending on the job you apply for, you need to modify your resume to focus on certain requirements. For example, if the job asks for marketing, you should have something to do with marketing in your resume such as \u201cHave taken two marketing courses in school\u201d or \u201cSupport a marketing campaign in a company during the summer\u201d Your resume should list some relevant information associate with the job requirements. If you do not have anything that matches the requirements than the company think you are not qualified. Since you are a new graduate, company does not expect that you have a lot of experiences as long as you have some knowledge on what they need, you have a good chance. As I have written previously in my blog, the best job is not the job that is advertised but base on contact. So you may need help from someone you know, do not hesitate to ask for help. Maybe your family knows people who can assist you with your job search. It may be someone in the family or relative. Make a list of people you believe may be able to help you in your job search, and contact them individually. Some may be able to actually introduce you to a company while others may provide useful advice.<\/p>\n

If you have interviews but no offer, you may review your performance to see why they are not hiring you? Remember that your impression is important. If you look nervous, they may think you are not confident. If you do not appear comfortable, they may think you are difficult to work with. Please understand that the company only has fifteen minutes or half an hour to evaluate you so you must be prepared. According to some studies, when you have an interview, you already have 50% of getting hired so your performance during the interview is important. You may need to practice some interview techniques to prepare yourself. The interview is a business meeting. You must conduct yourself and communicate in a polite and professional manner. Keep the conversation focused on the job and your career, as well as your qualifications. This is not a time to discuss personal matters (Movies, music etc.) or to ask about salary or benefits (Vacation, healthcare etc.). You must appear confident that you can do the job and enthusiast about the company. You must do some research to learn about the company so you can say something about why you want to work for them. It is NOT about having a job but about building a career with the company. This is an important point that many student do not understand. You want to stay and work there and advancing your career in that company. This is also not a place to talk about other companies express dissatisfaction with anything. Keep the meeting positive and answer the interviewer’s questions concisely and substantively. Since you are graduating soon, you should put all efforts to find job that fits your field of study. Do NOT think about switching to another area at this time, you still have time to do that later.<\/p>\n

Looking for job is probably the hardest job you will ever have. It will take a lot of effort, many attempts, a lot of hopes, and many disappointments. Few weeks ago, there was a Japanese report that graduates in Asia (Japan, S. Korea, China, Malaysia etc.) spend about 10 minutes or less per day looking for a job<\/strong>.<\/b> I was surprised about this attitude. Are these students dreaming? Do they think somebody will just give them a job?\u00a0 In today’s economy, competition is fierce and if some graduates think miracles will happen just because they graduate than they must be dreaming. The report went further to explain that many students believe that it is difficult to find job in a bad economy so they want to wait for thing to get better. Since most of them still live with their parents, they do not see the urgent to find job because their parents are taking care of them. The question is when will the economy get better? Three months, one year or three years? Nobody knows, even the best economists could not even predict. So why having such an attitude? Do they know that their parents also have to work hard to raise them and they expect that by graduate from college, they can take care of themselves? Do they know that looking for job is a full time job, which means you must spent at least 6 to 8 hours per day? The report found that U.S and European graduates were more aware of the economy situation than Asian students and they often work harder and more determine to find job. When they could not find job, a majority are working part time in restaurants, bookstores, retail business rather than waiting for the economy to get better.<\/p>\n

Most of us will spend one-third or more of our lives at work. We spend about 40 to 50 years working so it is important to invest the time necessary to get the right job. We should put every effort to do that because the skills of finding job will develop your strengths, your determinations, your characters and you should do that rigorously until you get a good job.
