Study foreign language<\/p>\n

Last week, a student sent me advertising in local newspapers which stated that you could learn foreign languages such as English, French, or Japanese by listening to a few CDs and asked for my opinion.<\/p>\n

I have seen advertises like this all over the world, especially in Asian countries where the need to learn foreign languages is high. My recommendation: \u201cNo one can learn a foreign language by listening to a CD just like listening to music. Do NOT waste your money on thing like this.\u201d If your goal is to learn a foreign language, buying the CDs will NOT help. You probably do NOT learn much from \u201cSpecial books\u201d which advertise that you can speak a foreign language within few weeks or a month. These are all false advertising.<\/p>\n

Learning a foreign language is NOT easy. It means you must practice and it takes time. There is a language proficiency scale developed by the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) that goes from 0 to 5. “0” means you only know few words such as \u201cYes, No, Hello, Goodbye\u201d and “5” means you speak fluently just like a native speaker. The FSI found that a level of “2” is necessary to communicate when travel in a foreign country and level \u201c3\u201d is good enough to study or live in a foreign country. Reaching level \u201c2\u201d requires about seven hundred to one thousand hours of instruction AND practice. It usually takes 6 months to a year of practice to get to this level. \u201cLevel 3\u201d requires more intensive learning and much more hours of practices.<\/p>\n

My recommendation is if you want to learn a foreign language you should take foreign language classes in your school. It is much better to start in the beginner’s classes then move to intermediate then to advanced courses in your local school. There is no miracle or short cut in learning a foreign language, it just takes time and you must be patient.<\/p>\n

I believe that in this globalized world, everyone should know at least one foreign language. Some only need to know a few sentences, but some may need much more depending on your career. To become bilingual or multilingual takes a long time, but the rewards is worthwhile and in many cases it is a necessity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
