Online school<\/p>\n

A student wrote to me: \u201cI am currently pursuing a Computer Science degree from an on-line university. The school promises me that I can do it in three years instead of four and gives me a scholarship if I enroll. Will I be able to get a good job with an online degree as with a degree from regular school? If I want to pursue a Master degree in a regular university, would they accept my on-line degree?”<\/p>\n

Answer:\u00a0 Companies may react differently to on-line degree. Some probably do not pay attention but some may view it negatively. On-line university concept is relatively new and many schools do not have the same reputation as regular university. At least not yet. There are few good on-line universities but many bad ones. Some only want your money and do not care whether you really study or not, that give on-line university a very bad image.\u00a0 I know that many companies prefer regular university than on-line and as long as there are many degreed students from regular university apply for the same job, it would put on-line students in a disadvantage. There are many bad news about on-line degrees regarding cheatings, hire somebody to study for them, or not qualified for basic works so companies are reluctant to hire on-line schools\u2019 students. The same thing also happens when you apply for an advanced degree in regular schools, some may accept you and some may not. If your on-line school is a ABET accredited school, then you may not have problem of getting in an advanced program of a regular school. If it is NOT an accredited school then your degree is worthless.<\/p>\n

I think you must be careful about choosing your school. You need to do some exploring before make a decision. You need to learn more about the school that you are planning to enroll and get a better sense of the types of jobs that their students are getting after graduate. Whatever your decision, remember that it is your money, your future, your career that you ultimately choose. The Number one mistake that college students make is make decision quickly without careful research then graduate with a worthless degree and no skills.<\/p>\n

No degree will get you a job. A degree will only HELP you to get a job; it just will not GUARANTEE you a job. You must have knowledge and skills to qualify for a job that means you must demonstrate that to your employer. A school that promises to give you a degree in shorter time and a scholarship to get you enroll may sound unusual.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
