The next step is to demonstrate that you are the \u201cbest person for the job\u201d as you compete with two or three final candidates in the interview. However, many students failed during the job interview because they are not prepared.<\/p>\n

Before any interview, you must learn something about the company. You should seek out information about the company and anything relate to the position in which you are interviewing. Today with the internet, it is easier to find out about a company via their web sites. You must know about the business of the company; what their operation is and how well the company is doing in the market. You must know the company\u2019s purpose and how the job that you apply relates to the company so during the interview you can \u201cprove\u201d that you are the \u201cbest person\u201d that fit for that position. Imagine if the interviewer ask you: \u201cWhy do you want to work for us?\u201d and your answer is: \u201cI do not know, I just want a job\u201d. The other candidate\u2018s answer is: \u201cYour company is the fastest growing company in the market, the company has won major contracts with new customers and are growing strong, and I want to build a career with strong company like this \u2026\u201d Guess who will get a job offer?<\/p>\n

When coming to the interview, you must understand that the interview begins the time you enter the door. You must be careful about your attitude and how you treat everyone. Many students do not pay attention to this detail. Some wear iPod headphones to listen to music in the waiting room. Some exchange jokes with the receptionist without knowing that sometime managers do ask the receptionist on her opinion about you. Few years ago, there was an incident where the vice president who was a woman happened to pick up a package in the reception desk. A job candidate came in and said something to her or asked her something that offended her. He probably thought she was just a receptionist. By the time he was interviewed, the vice president came in and requested to do the interview by herself. You may guess what would happen there. There were several times that the receptionist reported to managers about certain behaviors from job candidates, especially some who did not respect her. None of these candidates would get the job and you know why. What you do, how you behave, even before the interview may determine whether you are the \u201cright person\u201d for the company or not. You must act professional and be polite to everybody. There is nothing better than a smile and a polite \u201cThank you\u201d afterward.<\/p>\n

During the interview, you must listen carefully to each question and answer properly. Of course you are nervous, everybody is nervous in the job interview but if you do not understand the question, you can ask the interviewer to repeat it. Some students do not listen well and answer something that has nothing to do with the question. The interviewer may think that they try to \u201cescape\u201d a tough question by give a nonsense answer. The best way to give an answer is precise, and provides specific examples of your accomplishment and experiences. The more detail you provide, the better your answer is. For example, you can say that you have done that particular technique in school and explain that it in detail to demonstrate your technical ability. You may say that you have learned about teamwork because you have done a Capstone project with a team of six students, then explain about team activities etc. If you do not know, be honest and say so. For example: \u201cI heard about that technique but my professor said that we will learn about it when we go to work since our school does not teach that technique. I believe if I get a job in your company I will be trained on that technique.\u201d Do NOT say something that you do not know. Honesty and sincerity are very important in an interview because the company judge you more on your attitude than your technical knowledge. They know what college graduates only have certain knowledge and do not expect that you know everything. Do NOT act like you know everything.<\/p>\n

At the end of the interview, it is common that the interviewer asks you whether you have any question. Many students fell into this trap by answering \u201cNo\u201d as they do not want to ask question. However, it may means that they are NOT interested to discuss anything further, and it is a negative answer. Remember that you always have questions to ask the interviewer. You want to talk more; you want to demonstrate that you are the \u201cright person for the job\u201d; I always recommend that students think about a numbers of questions to ask before the interview and prepare to ask them. It is a sign that you are interested in the company; it is a sign that you are serious about the job and you want to build a career with the company. However, never ask about salary, raise or benefits as it will be explain to you, after you get the offer. You must ask about career opportunities; about professional development; about additional trainings; about the future potential such as \u201cWhat would you consider to be the most important aspect of this job?\u201d or \u201cCan you tell me more about your software development method in your company\u201d, \u201cWhat do you see ahead for the company five years from now?\u201d or \u201cWhat opportunities are there for future development such as additional training?\u201d It will demonstrate that you are interested to work for them.<\/p>\n
