Dress for success<\/p>\n

There is a secret for success that few people would talk about. Of course, in theory everybody would agree that if you work hard, learn more, have strong technical and soft skills, you will be successful but few would mention that the image that you present also contribute to your personal success. Basically, your appearance creates the first impression on the people you meet. It does not mean you have to dress up like movie stars to give impression. It is the professional image that you present yourself to other is the first step in building that type of impression. According to a study by Dr. Albert Mehrabian at UCLA reveals that most people make decisions about a new person within the first thirty seconds to two minutes of interaction. He found that up to 37% of a first impression is based upon the person\u2018s tone of voice and 45% on the appearance. The study found that when we communicate with others, the majority of our message is communicated nonverbally and through voice, facial expression and body languages. Approximately seven percent of the message is communicated by words.<\/p>\n

The standard advice given to students who want to advance their career has always been to dress for the job that you want, not the job that you have currently. A professional appearance sets you apart from coworkers who are less concerned about projecting a successful, professional image. There was an article in a newspaper few weeks ago where the author wrote that today many graduates go to job interview in blue jeans, sport shirts, and tennis shoes. Some even have tattoo in their arms. Many chew gum, listen to iPod, or wear rumpled clothes which clearly show disrespect to the interviewers and the company that they are applying. I do not know whether the author exaggerated or not but if it is true than my question is: \u201cWho is going to hire these graduates? What kind of job are they applying? Are they completely ignorant or they do not care? As college students, they can dress whatever they want in schools; even some schools do have certain policy on dress code. But dressing like that during a job interview is NOT acceptable. Even in this day of casual dressing, your professional image will serve you well when promotions, raise, bonus choice assignments and departmental visibility are available.<\/p>\n

When I mentioned that article to my class, a student asked: \u201cDoes it really make a difference on how you dress in an interview? My answer is: \u201cYes, it does\u201d. You want other to respect you than you must show them your respect. There is no excuse for not dress professionally in an interview and even after get hired. You may not have to wear a suit and tie but appearance does matter. You do not have to spend a lot of money on your clothes but you need to look your best in a professional manner. You do not dress like a movie star when interview for a software job, you do not dress like an executive when apply for a restaurant job. You must have common sense in the way you dress because it is how other people see you. They do not know you well, they may not know that you are the best student in your school, but they do see you in your appearance and judge you during that very short time. The first impression you make on a potential employer is the most important one. The first judgment an interviewer makes is going to be based on how you look and what you are wearing.
