Project manager in new domain<\/p>\n

A project manager wrote to me: \u201cHow easy for a project manager to move from one domain to another? I am a project manager in a software company but want to move to a financial company. What do I need to succeed in the new domain?<\/p>\n

Answer: The principles of project management are the same, regardless of the domain. You always have to plan your work, track the differences of what actual happens and what you have planned, and take corrective actions if there is significant differences. The most important is to learn as much as possible about the industry and domain that you want to work for. Understand their customers and the needs and what type of projects that you may be assigned. You may need to review your own skills to identify what you have and what knowledge and skills that you need to learn. If you have been working for a company for a while it is common that you know what to do in that company but not quite sure what is happening outside world. You may need to start research the market, to find whether there is any technology or tools that you need to know.<\/p>\n

Remember that your next position as a project manager will be managing project whose subject matter you have no prior experience of. Even you have the competencies of a successful project manager but you also need time to learn about the new domain. As soon as you start the new job, you must get to know your co-workers, who may help you on your new position. You need to be willing to put in the extra effort and ensure each task is done accordingly and they are what the new company is looking for when hiring you. The length of time it takes you to adjust to a new job varies from person to person. While some may fit in immediately but to many, it may take a little longer. All you can do is try your best, and do your job the best way you know how. If you do not know something, ask questions. You are new and it is better to do something right the first time than have to do it over. Get to know your new team and what their interests are. Spend time with them to learn how things work in the new company. You also need to know your manager who has the authority to give you work and understand his expectations of you. Keep a positive attitude and an open mind, you will do well.<\/p>\n
