Skilled workers<\/p>\n

According to the study by the McKinsey Global Institute, by 2020 there will be a shortage of 38 million to 40 million skilled workers (Workers that have\u00a0 university degrees) to meet the demands of the global market as the world is transitioning from a manufacturing economy to information economy. At the same time, there will be a surplus of 95 million or more low-skill workers (Workers without university degrees) globally and this could trigger significant changes both politically and socially. Countries that fail in this transition will experience unstable economy and political crisis. The report bases its estimates on the projection of a global work force of 3.5 billion by the year 2020, compared with 2.9 billion today.<\/p>\n

According to another global study about future job prospective, 75% of job in the next ten years will require a college education since they will involve certain knowledge, especially knowledge about Information Technology (IT). With the proliferation of smart-phones and e-business, m-business, and m-government, there will be more demand on workers with IT skills as the world is transitioning quickly from manufacturing economy to the information economy. The study predicted that unemployment for low-skilled workers will increase to the highest in history about five to seven times more than current level. Countries with high population such as India and China will have to increase its educated work force in order to fulfill its need for 23 to 30 million high-skill workers by 2020.<\/p>\n

The report suggested that the shortage of high-skill workers could only be avoided by doubling the rate of college education attainment, retraining workers in technology, or encouraging the migration of educated workers to their countries. The report speculated that most countries will opt to select the easiest and less costly option by allowing educated workers to migrate to work in their countries rather than improving their education systems or retrain current workers. The concern is what will happen to countries that lose their skilled workers?
