First Year Students<\/p>\n

Last week, there was a newspaper report about the failure of college students. The author collects thousand cases where students either dropped out or be expelled. The evidence is clear, the highest number of college failure and quit school is first year students. This is not a surprise because many first year students are not prepared for college or ready to assume their own responsibilities.<\/p>\n

Being a first-year student is not easy; it requires some preparations because this could be the first time students learn about their own responsibilities, their behavior and consequences. Students come to a new environment very different from high school where they meet new friends, new teachers, new challenges, new responsibilities, and new expectations. Some adjust well to this change by learning to manage their time and focus on their study but many do not. Without certain guidances, they are easily distracted by unnecessary things that keep them away from their educational goals.<\/p>\n

If you look at college today, you will be surprised at how many students do not go to class regularly. As a professor, I often check for attendance but many of my colleagues do not, especially ones who teach larger classes with 60 to 100 students. Of course, it is impossible to check attendance on every students but regular class attendance is the first thing students must learn to do in college. When students go to class every day, they get all the important information. They know what the professor\u2019 expects and what they must do. If they attend class every day, they do not have to rely on someone tell them what is taught in class. They hear professors talk about exams and assigned works and they can ask questions if they do not understand something. Of course, they do not know that if they are not in class. Many professors give suggestions about what to study or what to focus on for exams. Actually I often do this to reward students who always attending class. By go to class regularly, students let the professor know that they are there to study as it could affect their grades. At the end of the semester, if professors see that some students missed several classes, they would assume that these students did not care about study. Of course, if they do not care, why should they care? This will affect their grade. For example, a student who has a 72 point in final exam could be given 75 (Passing grade) by a professor if the professor believe the student is serious about study. For a student who missed class often, it would be difficult to be generous in grading.<\/p>\n

Why some students missed class or often come to class late? The main reason is the lack of sleep or could not wake up in time for classes. Today many college students often stay up late at night to play video games, go out with friends in coffee shops, movies, or all night parties. When students start to learn the habit of staying up late at night they can find that their study go down significantly. For an average students, stay up late is always a disaster. The report found that grade point of students who stay up late went down by a half and 74% of student who failed college admitted that they often stayed up late at night to play video games, or went to late night parties and drinking alcohol. Party and drinking for first-year students have a lethal combination. It is the most dangerous thing you can imagine to a young person. It is not just young men are drinking; some young women also learn to drink too. When both young men and women drink a lot in party, the consequence can be devastating. My advice: do not drink during your college year.<\/p>\n

Some students do not agree with me. They believe that college is the time for them to learn about many things and they can handle them. There are people who advise students that college is the best time of their life so they should enjoy it because when they graduate and go to work, they will not have much chance to do that. There are also books and movies about life in college where students go to parties, have romances, and enjoy life but you rarely see anything about study at all. Do not believe it. It is nothing but a fantasy and imagination. What all night parties and a lot of drinking will do for you are to cause you to lose control, stay up late, miss classes, take you away from your study, and could have another devastating consequences if you are not careful about certain desires. It is difficult to resist certain temptations especially when you get drunk. Few people would like to mention this but the fact is a lot of young women get pregnant in the first year college and many students become unexpected parents when they not even mature enough to take care of themselves.<\/p>\n

During my 30 years of college teaching, I have seen many situations like that. Every year, there are students who come in and begging to give them few points so they can pass the course. I have seen bright students who do so well suddenly quit school because of unexpected pregnancy. I often advice new students that they go to school to get educated and it is the highest priority, everything else can wait but they often ignore it. One student said: \u201cYou talk like my parents; I do not need such advice.\u201d In that case, I joke: \u201cIt is only an advice, not a requirement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some first year students told me that they know what to do as they are ready for college but at the end of the year, many came to me for additional advices and felt bad that they cannot handle it well. I asked them: \u201cWhat have you learned? Most of them said the same thing: “I should have listened to you. It is a bad idea that I did not attend class regularly or put in more time to study. I did not know college is so difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fact is if their first year grade is not good or under average then they have to work harder to make up in their next few years. In that case they will have to study harder and put in more effort to catch up. As they advance to second and third years, the courses are more challenging. Having bad grade in first year will require top grades in second and third year to make up. If students graduate with an average grade, they will have difficult time to compete with other students for better job, better paid. Companies do not hire people with just a degree. The degree is a requirements but the grade determines who get hired and who do not. If you do not have at least a grade point above average or top score, you will have difficulty in your employment. So my advice is: Please focus on your study, especially on your first year to build a good study habit. All who go to college have a bright future ahead. Do not miss this opportunity. Today few college professors would give advice and few people would tell you directly about college.
