In my class<\/p>\n

In the last blog, I have written about class attendance. Of course attending class is better than not attending class but you should not just sit in class and counting every minute to get out. You are there to learn so you must listen to what the professor says and if needed, take notes. You should not go to class and sleep; you should not go to class and sending email or text messages to friends; you should not go to class and whisper gossips with your classmates. You should go to class and be prepared to learn. That is what you go to college for, to learn and to get educated.<\/p>\n

There are many methods of teaching and learning. I prefer the active method where students learn materials prior go to class and class time is mostly for discussions. Some students do not like that learning method because it makes them study and come to class ready to discuss. They like to hear the professor lectures and explains to them everything they need to know in class, and then they will study later. I explained my logic: \u201cYou do not have enough time because materials in college are overwhelming. If you take a passive attitude you may not be able to learn enough and if you slip off, you will not be able to catch up. By following the active learning method, you learn the materials at least three times and you can retain it better. The first time is to read the materials before class to understand the basic concept. The second time is to discuss the materials with others in class and listen to the professor explain them so you understand it deeper as it requires you to organize your thought. The third time is after class, you review the materials one more time for the things that you missed or do not understand well. By following this technique, you do not waste a lot of time and be able to understand the material well. You also do not need to prepare for exam since you know it already, It is much better than memorize everything all night before the exam.<\/p>\n

For over 30 years of teaching, I noticed that unprepared students often like to sit in the back row with the hope that I do not see them and call them to discuss. I made a habit of calling on them to start the discussion first as I often start from the back row, move to the middle and the front row. I remembered one frustrated student told me: \u201cHow do I avoid being called to discuss the material? It seemed that I cannot escape your attention. No matter where I sit, you will always call me first.\u201d I told him: \u201cThe best way is to prepared, I will not call you if I know that you are ready and read the materials before class. I want to make sure that all of my students study well because I do pay attention.\u201d He turned out to be a better student afterward. After graduated he came to see me and said: \u201cProfessor, you were bad to me, you forced me to study. You made my life miserable and you made me look bad in front of everyone, including my girlfriend. She was so ashamed that she stopped going out with me until I put in my efforts. However without it, I would not graduate with honor and get a good job at Google.\u201d I told him: \u201cYou should thank your girlfriend instead\u201d.<\/p>\n

Many students only want to study what is taught and what is covered in the textbooks. As I have written several textbooks, it took me about two years to finish one and it took another year for the publication to review, print and distribute. By the time students get the book, it was three years old. With information technology, three year is a very long time and some materials may be obsolete so for the past ten years, I stopped writing textbook or rely on textbook but want students to read more from the news and technical journals which publish monthly. I want students to learn about the newest and latest technology to keep their skills current with the fast pace industry. That is why my advice to students is to read more news, more articles in technical magazines, and websites, and blogs to have an overall view of what is happening in the industry.<\/p>\n

On the first day of every class that I teach, I always made clear what students can expect from me and what I expect from them. I tell them what they need to read, what I recommend them to read, and what topics I like to discuss each week as well as when assignments are due. I always explain clearly how they will be evaluated, how often they will be evaluated with weekly quizzes, homeworks and sometime \u201cunannounced tests\u201d to make sure they attend all classes. One colleague asked me: \u201cWhy are you doing that? Wouldn\u2019t it be easier to follow the tradition of lecturing and textbooks with less tests and exams so you will not be so busy?\u201d I answered: \u201cI expect a lot from my students and they also expect a lot from me. I cannot ask them to do more if I do not. In teaching, it is not a one way street where professor pours knowledge into students but an exchange of information. As they learn more, they will have questions that I may not be able to answer and it forces me to learn new things too.
