Advice to a young teacher<\/p>\n

A young teacher wrote to me: \u201cI am graduating this year with a Master degree in Education and already get a job teaching in university. My bachelor\u2019s degree is in Electrical Engineering and I have worked two years for an electronic company but I really like teaching so I went back to school to study Education. However being a teacher is difficult because I would make much less than what I can make in the industry. My parents are not happy with my choice and my friends suggest that I do both by teaching and working at the same time. I am not sure what to do so I am asking for your advice. Please help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: Teaching is about a passion and an ideal. People choose to be teachers NOT because they need a job, but because they are passionate about education. People choose to be teachers NOT because they want to make money, but because they want to make a difference in someone\u2019s life. Teaching is about encouraging students not only to learn, but also HOW to learn. Teaching is about nurturing and developing hearts and minds of future generations and challenging them to do their best to contribute to their society.<\/p>\n

You have selected Education to be your career so you should follow your passion and do not let anything distract you from it. You have left a good job in the industry because you did not enjoy it, so do not look back. You cannot do everything to please everybody because you must please yourself first. After all it is your choice and it is your life. You cannot do anything half way and be an average teacher and average engineer. You should put your effort in being the best teacher possible. At the end, you could look back and knowing that you have done something good for you, for your students, for your society, and for your country.<\/p>\n

Please remember that teachers do NOT teach for the money, they do it because they enjoy teaching and because they want to teach. Teaching has its own intrinsic rewards such as seeing students making progress in a difficult course; watching a student reaching conclusion after many hours of experimenting; observing a smile across a face of student as learning all of a sudden happens. The main reward for teachers is NOT material things but in the satisfaction of seeing your students succeed. Nothing will make you happier than having former students saying that your teaching changed their lives.<\/p>\n

Teaching is about investigating new things, new information to share with students to broaden their knowledge. Good teachers never follow a fixed method, but always experimenting with new method to find the best way to help students learn. Good teachers work with every student because they know that they are the conductors and the class is their orchestra. All students play different instruments and at varying proficiencies. A teacher\u2019s job is to make all these instruments work together to make beautiful music.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
