The Indian tablet computer<\/p>\n

India is the first country that has developed a low-cost tablet computer running under the Android operating system. It is part of the country’s strategy to connect 25,000 colleges and 400 universities in a comprehensive e-learning program with the goal to produce 1 million programmers a year to meet global demand. The plan allows university students to purchase it at the low price of 2,200 rupees ($35 USD) but others can buy a commercial version at higher price, estimated at $60 to $80 USD. The main idea is a cheap computer that everyone can afford would benefit their students by allowing them to watch university lectures, lecture notes and other course information online. It is aimed at students who live in remote villages who cannot afford to go to big city.<\/p>\n

Although it has been announced last year with the Aakash 1 tablet but few students was able to buy it since the production was limited because of internal problems. While millions of students were waiting, government officials and several companies involved were arguing each others about financial disputes and lawsuits. When the Ministry of Human Resources asked the Indian Institute of Technology (I.I.T.) at Rajasthan to acquire and test 100,000 tablet computers for the project. I.I.T contracted it to DataWind, a Canadian company to build the tablet computer. DataWind subcontracted it to Quad Electronic, an Indian company for the production. Quad also subcontracted to several others for parts and since then, there were many arguments among people who involved the project.<\/p>\n

Eventually I.I.T. Rajasthan was replaced by I.I.T. Bombay as leader of the project. I.I.T. Rajasthan sued DataWind for money damage and almost every party involved sued each other while thousands of tablets computers were stored in a warehouse at Rajasthan and not distributed to students. IIT Bombay did not want to use the tablet designed by IIT Rajasthan so it came up with a new version tablet computer: The Aakash 2 which was supposed to be similar to the iPad. Professor Deepak B. Phatak, who is in charge of the Aakash project at I.I.T. Bombay, said he hopes to have a few thousand tablets soon and distributed to college students for testing and provide feedback. Meanwhile the arguments and disputes among companies and government continue.<\/p>\n

One student complained to the newspapers: \u201cThey have great plans, they have great vision but they cannot execute. Everything in this country is slow. Everything has to go through many levels of government offices, and each wants something from it. Big companies outsource to small companies, and small companies outsource to smaller companies as everyone want to be in the middle that do nothing but still make money. When things do not work, they take each other to court and it takes many months or years to settle the lawsuits. By the time things settle, the technology already changes and it becomes obsolete. A cheap tablet computer is a dream. A computer for every student is a dream. A plan to have million programmers is a dream. We cannot depend on them to help us.\u201d<\/p>\n
