President Obama at CMU<\/p>\n

Yesterday President Obama came back to visit Carnegie Mellon again and this time he met some of the young high school students who enroll in the special summer program called Summer Academy for Math and Science program (SAMS). This is the third times that he came to CMU since became the President of the United States. The CMU’s SAMS is a special program for high school students who are interested in math and science with a strong drive to excel. It is designed to build the self-confidence required to do well in a top-ranked universities like CMU. Through practical engineering and science projects, the students work side by side with CMU’s faculty, applying the concepts and principles to create innovative things that can be highly valuable for the industry.<\/p>\n

When high school student Devin Hentz came to Carnegie Mellon University’s SAMS program, he knew that he has to work hard but he never expect to meet President Barack Obama, who stopped by his class before his speech to a larger audience. Hentz said: “President Obama was really interested in CMU’s SAMS program, and he told me we need more math and science students in the U.S. It was great to meet him, but it was also kind of surreal.”<\/p>\n

President Obama spoke to a large audience who gathered on CMU campus lawn: \u201cWe have to invest more in our young people so they get the best education, because a higher education is an economic necessity. CMU with its reputation as one of the best universities in the U.S has supported our need to raise more math and science students by creating special program for high school students in a challenging academic environment \u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

The President also noticed the fact that CMU\u2019s entrepreneurial culture has helped to create more than 300 companies and 9,000 jobs over the past few years, and CMU startups represent 34 percent of the total companies created in Pennsylvania based on university technologies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
