Martial arts, College, and Startups<\/p>\n

When I was young, I like to read martial arts novels. Every novel has a hero, and as a pattern, it always starts with the hero travels in a journey to seek something ultimate. It could be the knowledge from a secret book of martial art or a special skill that a special teacher can teach him to defeat his enemies. In the beginning, the hero is always uncertain as the path is unclear and full of obstacles. He knows his goals but there are always enemies and obstacles along the road that he must overcome. Only by strong determination, courage, commitment and a lot of efforts, he finally defeats his enemies and reaches his goals triumphantly. Some novels have one hero, some have several who travel together but in the end only few reach the goal because others get distracted and fail. There are always strong morals and ethics in every martial art novel. Good always defeat evil, and honesty, integrity, and loyalty are always encouraged.<\/p>\n

This kind of pattern is not much different from the college journey that many of you are traveling today. As students, you go to university to seek knowledge and develop your skills. In the first year, many of you are uncertain as the path is unclear and full of obstacles and you do not know what to do. Of course, you know your goals but you are not sure whether you can succeed or not. College learning is not easy and there are obstacles. Only by determination, courage, commitment and a lot of efforts, you can overcome all obstacles and reach the ultimate goal.<\/p>\n

In martial art novels, there are stories about people who seek \u201cshort-cut\u201d or \u201ccheat\u201d just to get the ultimate skills but they usually do not end up well. They often died of \u201cReversed internal fire\u201d and destroy everything they have worked for. In colleges, there are students who also seek \u201cshort-cut\u201d and \u201ccheat\u201d to pass exams. Many get caught and get expelled from schools. Some do not and continue to seek \u201cshort-cut\u201d in life but someday they will regret because their lack of knowledge and experience when they have to face difficulties. If they \u201ccheat\u201d in school, they actually \u201ccheat\u201d themselves because without knowledge and skills to based on, they will do whatever they can, just to get what they want, including hurting others, or violate the laws etc. Ultimately they get caught and destroy themselves and everything that they have worked for.<\/p>\n

For thousands of year, our education systems not only provide students with knowledge, but also moral and ethic. Young children learn about being filial to parents; young people learn about being good and responsible persons and adult learn about being loyal to the country, being good citizens to their society. I often wonder whether or not current education is fulfilling its purpose. Some well educated people do not practice ethic. The financial crisis in the U.S is one clear example of the failure of an education system that lacks moral and ethic. To prevent society from decay into chaos is one of the goals of education. Education must enable students to analyze and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction. The function of education, therefore, is to teach students to think logically and morally. Education without moral will be a menace to society. Intelligence is not enough. Intelligence with moral character is the true goal of education. The complete education gives students not only knowledge, but also moral character. To be honest citizens, to be loyal to the country, students must have a strong character that can withstand any challenge, and not give up. Only through courage, determination and commitment they can overcome obstacles and challenges. People who have strong character, great aspirations, patience can go on to create great career that benefit everyone.<\/p>\n

The hero\u2019s journey in the martial art novel is also similar to startups in the technology industry. All new companies and new products begin with a vision, a hope of what could be, with a goal few others can see. It is this burning insight that differentiates entrepreneurs from regular workers in a company. Entrepreneur also travels in a journey with uncertain, risks and obstacles in order to achieve the vision. To succeed, they must go where no one has gone before, often full of obstacles and hardships. The journey tests their determination, stamina, and the limits of their courage. Every journey is unique as each entrepreneur is also unique. Today you know some of them by the names of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, or Marc Zuckerberg but few know what happened to them twenty or forty years ago. Each of them travels in an uncertain path without roadmap and guidance. There were many who also travelled like them but somehow they were distracted or could not overcome obstacles. That is why we only have a few of them.<\/p>\n

If you read \u201cSteve Jobs\u201d book carefully, you can see how he overcame his obstacles; how many times he failed; how many time he was taken advantages of; how many times he was cheated by his best friends. In the end, he reached his ultimate goals of create not one industry but several. He created the personal computer industry where everybody thought it was impossible to go against the giant IBM. He succeeds with Apple but due to his na\u00efve in business, he got thrown out of the company that he helped created. I wonder how many people could survive this disaster and not bitter? But to Steve Jobs, it was a lesson that he learned, not to make the same mistake again. With determination and courage, he restarted another journey that allowed him to create a new computer animated industry with Pixar; then the music download industry with iPod; the smart phone industry with iPhone, and the new tablet computer with iPad. How could he do all in such a short period of time? By having a vision of the future and a strong courage to make it into reality, I believe if nothing happen at Apple, if he did not get throw out than we probably never have Pixar, iPod, iPhone and iPad.<\/p>\n

Some people believe that it seems like luck. But I do not think so, just like any martial art novel, every hero will fail, not one time but many times until they succeed. Every failure is a new lesson to learn. Every hero will get beat up by his enemy many times but due to the strong courage and determination, they eventually overcomes obstacles and reach their goals.<\/p>\n

Now I guess you understand what I want to say in this blog. I believe you can do the same to overcome all obstacles to succeed in your quest in college. You learn from failures, you set your career goal early and determine to develop the skills that will help you to reach your goal.
