When parents advise their children<\/p>\n

Traditionally, many parents want their children to follow their career path. If a father is a medical doctor, he wants his children to study medical; if the mother is a teacher, she wants her children to study education. However, things have changed so it is important for parents to advise children that they should study in areas where the jobs are or will be. In this global economic recession, it is difficult to find good jobs if you do not have the skills that company want. Because many college graduates cannot find job, the most important thing that parents can ask their children is: \u201cCan you get a good job with that degree?\u201d<\/p>\n

Parents should understand that their children will have to plan their careers differently from what they did. Parents should focus on helping their children identify skills to succeed in the global economy than just a degree. According to a recent study, the most important skills are in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) as well as foreign languages, and soft-skills. Most importantly they will need to develop a lifelong learning attitude to continuously acquire new skills as they progress through their lives. Today a college degree is no longer a guarantee for job and even when they get good job; it does not mean they will spend their whole career in one single company or even in a single industry. All future workers will have to deal with changes by follow the market trends, acquire the right skills, knowing every skill will change with time. For example, during the 2000 to 2008, business administration, finance, banking, stock market trading have attracted many ambitious students. An \u201cMBA\u201d degree was so hot that there was a notion among young women: \u201cNo MBA, No marriage.\u201d Yet, just in the past few years, there are so many \u201cUnemployed MBA\u201d, as more banks and finance companies filed for bankruptcy. With millions of unemployed experienced business people, newly graduates will not be able to compete for jobs.<\/p>\n

Parents should explain to their children that the law of supply and demand will dictate whether there will be jobs when they graduate or not. Students must be prepared by following market trends, not just in local market but also global market, because changes from one place could impact others. To do that, they must read more, investigate more, and be active and alert on new emerging trend. In discussing with their children about career paths, parents should advise them to think broadly about the education and skills that they must acquired and actively planning their future so they could seize the best opportunity when it comes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
