Jobs of the future<\/p>\n

All over the world, students are starting their first year in college. In these schools, students will be asking the same question: What will happen to them upon graduation? To some students the near term goal is to have a degree than worry about the future later. Unfortunately, today a college degree is not a guarantee for job as the number of degreed graduates but without jobs is increasing. The fact is it depends on the field of study, on their knowledge and skills that determine their future. From the U.S to Europe, from Australia to China, students are anxious due to the high rate of unemployment among graduates and the fact that it may take many more years for the global economy to recover.<\/p>\n

According to a global report, approximately 6.5 million students are starting college each year, and with rare exceptions, most are nervous about their future. The financial crises in the U.S and the European economic recession have them worry about their futures. Certainly students who are planning careers in financial services, stock market trading, or business administration may be anxious about their perspectives. The global report suggests a list of careers to avoid, including finance, stock market trading, marketing, advertising, and business administration as there are so many unemployed graduates since 2009. On the contrary, students who consider Information Technology areas (Computer science, Software engineering, and Information system management) have the most to hope for as there is a shortage of qualified graduates in the past seven years. Electrical and electronic engineering are also hot as well as Medicine and Health care professionals.<\/p>\n

The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics puts Information Technology as the fastest growing career with a growth trajectory of 22% from 2010 to 2025. Specialties such as Network systems, Security analysts, and Data communications expected to grow by 53% for the same period. Engineering areas will grow at a rate of 15%; some will double that rate such as special areas of Biotechnology, Environmental, and Industrial engineers, all of which will exceed 20% growth through 2025. Medicine and the Health care industry are expected to also grow fast by adding 13 million jobs globally in the next ten years. The global report also stated that due to the recession, government and public service jobs are the worst. Many government programs are being reduced as governments try to balance their budgets. Students who study traditional fields such as Sociology, History, Government Administration, Public policy, and Political Science and hope to find job in government offices will be disappointed because of massive government reducing programs. The report stated that over 90% of these graduates will not be able to find job for at least the next ten years. With current European recession continue to getting worst, getting job in government is an illusion.<\/p>\n

An industry official said: “We are seeing high growth in these areas, despite the recession. As more companies are moving into automation, more computer experts and engineers are needed. Of course as more people are growing older and live longer, they need more Medical doctors and healthcare workers. All over the world, hospitals are having difficulty filling positions due to a lack of these skilled workers. The problem is many college students do not pay attention to these information and still believe that as long as they have degree their future is good. School advisors often advise students to select career based on what they do well in high school but there is a big difference between high school and college. You may do well in history in high school but it does not mean you should study history in college. This is na\u00efve as college education is about preparing for a future career when high school education is about building a foundation for your knowledge. Of course, no one can tell students what to study but they must know more about the job market when planning their careers. They need information to make the right decision. Unfortunately, some colleges do not provide this vital information. They afraid that if a majority of students switch to specific areas than schools do not have enough professor to teach. That is why we have situation with many graduates who could not find jobs when there are so many job openings but not enough qualified workers. ”<\/p>\n

Students who are entering colleges this year need to understand that by the time they graduate there will be more changes due to a job market that is still recovering from recession. With so much uncertainty, it is best to seek skills that are needed with some flexibility so they will not be disappointed.
