Advice to a young professor<\/p>\n

A young professor wrote to me: \u201cI like your writing on improving education as I am starting my teaching career; I want to make a difference. How do I start and do you have any advice?”<\/p>\n

Answer: Welcome to our teaching family. Today there are several new teaching methods that we can use to improve students\u2019 learning. Many colleges are beginning to recognize the importance of student engagement in the classroom. The idea that students who contribute actively to their learning environments through experiences such as learning by doing, active learning are more likely to succeed in college and after graduation. To improve the education process, it is best to start with the faculty.<\/p>\n

Although many professors believe that their job is only to teach but I believe that if professors are involving in advising students and have conversations earlier with students about their study planning choices, their career planning and be their mentors then I think it will start a new approach that help students\u2019 experiences over the course of their college life more pleasantly. The new method of teaching is focusing on \u201cAdvising-as-teaching\u201d model so that professors can use advising as the other ways of teaching as their role will switch from lecturing to facilitating and guiding as students are becoming active learners to develop their skills intellectually, and ethically.<\/p>\n

Teaching is the most important career but it often not well recognized in this fast changing world. No one would become teacher to get rich or famous. We become teacher because we care for our students and want to build a future generation of knowledgeable and ethical professionals. Because active learning depends on students\u2019 motivation but their motivation depends on their understand of what we teach. We must be the ones that motivate them intellectually and emotionally. We must enter the classroom with high confidence that we are there for a reason. We must speak actively and enthusiastically about the subject and our expression will transmit to the whole class. As we are concerned about our students, about their life and their learning, the students know it too.<\/p>\n

Traditional professors often act busy and do not want to see students outside of classroom. They are creating a wall between them and the students. We should do the opposite; we should be their guides, their mentors and allow them to see us whenever they need someone to help them. Besides classroom teaching, I made myself available to students throughout the time when I am in school. My office door is always open so students could come to see me at anytime. Of course, if someone makes an appointment, I will make time to see them first. I often spend the first week of class for discussion and advising where I share with them my experience as well as things that they need to prepare in order to succeed in my courses. I also encourage them to ask questions and raise concerns so we can come to a mutual understanding. I know what they want and they know what I expect of them.<\/p>\n

As professors, we only teach with confidence when we are prepared. We only teach enthusiastically when we go to class with explicit goals in mind. We know what we want to accomplish and we have planned how that will happen. That does not mean that we are following a plan for the day. We should be flexible because there will be unplanned opportunities for new learning, students will ask about things that we may not even think of. After it happen, we can add them into our overall course plan. Of course, being prepared is not about perfection. We teach with confidence when we know that we have done our preparation as we hope our students have done their preparations too. But we teach realistically; as teachers, we tend to prepare more intensely than students. To make the class more interactively, I often spend more time to discuss current events related to the course materials. To do that, I must read more so I can share with students on what are happening in the industry and what are the technology trends. Students like that as it broadens their view of the technology industry. For example, last year I asked how many of them have read \u201cThe world is flat\u201d by Thomas Friedman, about ten out of thirty students raised their hands. I told them: \u201cI want all of you to read it by next week then we can discuss it.\u201d This year when I ask the question, almost all of them raise their hands. One student say: \u201cWe heard it from previous class students so we are preparing.\u201d That is what active learning is all about.<\/p>\n

We teach effectively when we listen to what students have to say about our teaching and their learning. We are not assuming about what they should know but dealing with what they do know and building onto that what they need to know. As professors, we gain more confidence when we understand what is happening in our class. We are teaching and learning together in class. The students listen to us and we listen to them. They can recommend changes but we decide whether they should be made. They can observe things about our teaching that we may not see but we decide whether changing would make it easier for them to learn. A student suggested that they want to know more about real situations so I collected a lot of \u201ccase studies\u201d to have them read and discuss in class. I have them read \u201cSteve Jobs\u201d book and discussed about the changing in the technology market and how one person with vision can change the entire industry. I discussed the style of management, the chaotic of the fast changing market as well as the perfection that Steve Jobs demand from their workers. I told them: \u201cMany of you could be another Steve Jobs, not for his wealth or his fame but for creating an industry that can benefit everyone in society.\u201d Most students agreed with me on that.<\/p>\n

Teaching is not an easy job. Things that we do not expect do happen and sometime we cannot explain why. That may erode our confidence but we must not let it bother us. We are there for a purpose and we have to believe that we are doing the right thing. If we care and show our caring, students will notice that and improvement will happen.
