Due to the economic downturn, the company\u2019s business has dropped and the owner reduced working hours to all temporary workers, and I only work few hours a week. I need the work to help my family and pay for my school. Recently a customer called me and said he liked the way I worked and wanted me to do some programming and testing for him. He did not want to go through the company I worked for but asked me if I would be willing to do the job by myself, or recruiting others to help. The pay was better than I would have received in my current company. I feel bad as I may betray my boss or stealing his business. Is it an ethical violation? I do not know what to do. Please advice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Answer: While I understand the need to help your family and pay for college, I do not think it should be a factor in your decision or determining right from wrong. I believe there are few facts that may help you to make your own decision. First, the relationship between you and your employer is very important in determining your duties. From your e-mail, you are a temporary worker (summer job for student) not a permanent employee with salary and benefit. Thus, you may have less duty than a full time employee. (After the summer, you will go back to school) Second, it is the customer who asked you to help and not you seeking work from him. This is also an important fact to consider. Your company does not own the customer as the customer makes decision to do whatever he wants. Therefore if you accept the work, you do not violate the ethic rules. Of course, you must accept the risk that if your current employer find out, he may be angry and terminate your temporary job. This risk would be more severe if you ask others to join you to do the work and that would be a different thing.
