The software was developed at the CMU Robotics Institute by Tony Stentz, now director of the NationalRoboticsEngineeringCenter.<\/p>\n<p>The software builds maps of the terrain that a robot encounters so it can retrace its steps or plot a new course, if necessary. A version of the software was also used by NASA&#8217;s two previous Mars exploration rovers, Spirit and Opportunity in late 2006 to improve their autonomous navigation capabilities. The Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL), which employs a number of CMU students, has licensed the software from CMU and further adapted it for use by Curiosity.
