CMU Software Helps Guide Rover on Mars<\/p>\n

NASA has successfully landed its rover (Robotic car) called \u201cCuriosity\u201d on Mars, it was a significant achievement for the rover hardware but it was Carnegie Mellon University navigation software that helps guide the robot during its mission to determine if Mars ever could have supported life. The software was developed at the CMU Robotics Institute by Tony Stentz, now director of the NationalRoboticsEngineeringCenter.<\/p>\n

The software builds maps of the terrain that a robot encounters so it can retrace its steps or plot a new course, if necessary. A version of the software was also used by NASA’s two previous Mars exploration rovers, Spirit and Opportunity in late 2006 to improve their autonomous navigation capabilities. The Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL), which employs a number of CMU students, has licensed the software from CMU and further adapted it for use by Curiosity.
