What study<\/p>\n

The Information Technology Association of America predicts that 1.6 million new IT jobs will be created nationally during the next two years but more than half of these jobs will go unfilled. The U.S. Software Association estimates that there are ten jobs in U.S. software industry for every bachelor’s graduate in Computer Science, Software Engineering and Information System Management.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview on TV, A high-tech industry representative said: \u201cWe can create prosperity for the economy but without workers, we cannot do anything. We need more workers and it is time to allow us to bring in more workers from oversea.\u201d Many economists found that each new job in the IT industry is creating four additional jobs in other sectors in the U.S and Europe and concluded that having a strong technology industry can help reduce the unemployment problem and push the economy out of current recession. However the wealth created by high-tech industry is depending mostly on the education system. Investing in education will not only create the skilled workers that the industry needs today but also in the future as it prepares the next generation of high-tech workers and entrepreneurs. According to the report 85% of the jobs in high technology industry requires either a bachelor’s or a master’s degree but the number of students enroll in these fields is still low in most U.S College. A Wall Street journal analyst predicted: \u201cIt would take ten years or more to meet the demand of the industry today. As high tech continues to change with emerging new technology, we may never solve this problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

The shortage of technology skilled workers has reached a boiling point where companies are competing for workers and the salary of people with these skills is reaching the all time high. This year, new graduates are receiving extraordinary offers. CMU Computer Science & Software Engineering graduates are reporting starting salaries as high as $135,000 and bonuses as high as $20,000. Many received 3 to 4 job offers. Even second-year students received summer job offers from top companies when traditionally companies only hire third years students in the summer.<\/p>\n

A student told me: \u201cI did not know how well we are treated within high-tech industry. As a third year student in software engineering I can earn summer salaries equal to students from other areas can expect to earn when they graduate. Last summer, I worked for a software company in Seattle. My project had members all over the world and as a team we must meet to discuss teamwork and build team relationship every month so my boss sent me to Paris, London and Italy to meet with other members. I love to travel but did not know about this opportunity until now. My boss said: \u201cToday most works are done globally so you must go to several countries each year to learn how to work in different places.\u201d It was more than I expected. I am being paid to travel but the most surprising thing was when the summer was over, they offered me a position even I still have another year before graduation. If I study something else, I do not think I ever get opportunity like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Currently the technology industry is exploding. Companies are hiring aggressively due to the shortage of skilled workers. Each year hundred thousand skilled workers are brought in via special visa status (H1B) and technology companies are outsourcing billion dollars of works to other countries like India and China. Technology area is so hot and technology skilled workers are in high demand so if you have not decide about what to study in college, you may want to consider Information Technology area such as Computer Science, Software Engineering or Information System management.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
