A student wrote to me: \u201cI want to work as a Web developer. Do I need a college degree? Is it possible to get a job just by having short-term certificate training? What programming language do I need? What skills must I have? Please advice.”<\/p>\n

Answer: The job market for web developers differs among countries. In the U.S. and some European countries, Web development job often requires a college degree as a minimum. Most companies require Bachelor\u2019s degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering. They also require additional skills in specific programming languages and knowledge of database to collect information on the web. In other countries such as India and China, web development jobs do not require a college degree. Some companies only require a two-year college education or vocational certificate. However, if you want to advance your career to higher levels, you do need a college degree.<\/p>\n

The main programming languages in Web development environment are Java, C++, C# and Visual Basic. Today Ruby on Rails and Python are also popular. Most web development jobs also require skills in scripting languages such as Perl, VBScript, and PHP. Some companies require skills in JavaScript, DOM, HTML, and CSS. To collect information from web users, most web developers need to know MYSQL, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server or XML for documentation and data transfer.<\/p>\n

Although many Web developers prefer to work in programming and testing but some also move up to software architecture role which deal with complex and high level design.
