Why Mobile app sector is important?<\/p>\n

A student wrote to me: \u201cWhy do you think mobile apps can take over personal computer software development? In my opinion, there is nothing exciting about mobile apps besides develop games that sell for $1 a download. Why do you think students need to learn more about mobile apps? Please advice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: Today mobile apps development is becoming a fast growing sector over personal computer software. There are more people using mobile phone than personal computer. All over the world, mobile apps developers are in high demand. Of course, some people only see mobile apps as game applications but there are much more types of app that need attention such as mobile apps for healthcare, mobile apps for business, mobile apps for e-commerce, mobile apps for government services etc. Almost anything that you can think of then probably there is an app for it.<\/p>\n

Last week I saw a smart-phone app that allows users to unlock it via facial recognition. The phone recognizes the owner\u2019s face so you do not have to type in password. At the same time speech recognition app in mobile phone allows you to talk to the phone and ask questions for the best restaurant within a walking distance or direction to a bank. New applications are invented every day. If you do not have anything to do, you can talk to your phone just like talking to a friend. The smart phone is able to answer some questions now but in the near future, it may be able to talk to you much more like a real conversation.<\/p>\n

When I travel in foreign countries, I often use my smart-phone for translation. I ask question in English than allows it to translate into Japanese, Chinese, and French. It is very easy to use and very convenience. When people answer me in their own language, my smart phone will translate it into English. Having this translation mobile app, I can easily go to many places by myself. Last summer, I travelled in China and Japan by train and talked to many people using my smart phone. It is convenience and fun and that is the power of speech translation mobile app.<\/p>\n

By the way, if you think $1 per download is nothing than please look at how much \u201cAngry Birds\u201d has made for Rovio, the company that created it. Since 2009, it has over a billion downloads. Today there are several \u201cAngry Birds\u201d games for mobile phone as well as personal computer. It is estimated that a third of people on earth has played \u201cAngry Birds\u201d game, at least once and the money continue to pour in this mobile app company. Few months ago, another mobile app company called Instagram was acquired by Facebook for one billion dollars. This made twelve persons who worked for this company instant multi-millionaire.<\/p>\n

I believe that mobile apps will be a growing area, much faster than personal computer and students may need to look closely at this trend and opportunities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
