A student wrote to me: \u201cI like Math and want to study Mathematics in college but my friends said that the field has no future and my family wants me to study Computer Science. I am very confused and need your advice. Please help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: In my opinion, Mathematics is the most sophisticated sciences that can be applied in almost any field. Math is needed in computer, engineering, physics, business and many more. I cannot think of any field today that do not need Math. I think your friends may not understand the important of mathematics so they are confused. My advice is if you like Math, study Math and do not let others to distract you from pursuing what you like.<\/p>\n

Basically, Mathematics can be divided into two areas: Theoretical mathematics and Applied mathematics. Theoretical mathematicians continue to improve mathematical knowledge by developing new principles or solving previously unknown relationships between existing principles of mathematics. This type of abstract knowledge is the key factor in producing many scientific and engineering achievements. Most theoretical mathematicians are working in university as professors or researchers.<\/p>\n

Applied mathematicians use theories and techniques, such as modeling and computational methods, to solve problems in business, engineering, technology, and economics. For example, they analyze the effects and safety of new drugs, the aerodynamic characteristics of an airplane, or the cost-effectiveness of a business processes etc. Most Applied mathematicians are working in the industry or for the government. Because mathematics is the foundation of all science and technology areas, many mathematicians may work as engineers, scientists, physicists, statisticians, and even economists since these areas are using mathematics extensively.<\/p>\n

Graduates in mathematics can find many opportunities in academic, industry and government. For example, the finance industry uses sophisticated mathematical models for pricing of stocks and bonds. The petroleum industry use mathematic models to identify the flow of oil underground. Medical industry using mathematic models to process medical images (CAT, MRI) to detect and diagnose diseases. Software industry use mathematic to create sophisticated algorithms for computation in their software products. Manufacturing Industry use mathematic models to design, structural components for airplanes or automobile parts etc.<\/p>\n

Today most mathematic calculations are using computer so if you study math in college, you will also learn about computer and programming languages. You can still get a good job in the software industry with your degree in math so you can let your parent know that there is a bright future in studying mathematics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
